Happy Arbor Day. Thought we'd honor the raggedy and lumpy as well as the gracious and lordly.
I was hiking with Shelby the other day and encountered a very unobservant grouse strutting and pecking spruce buds beneath this tree. I'd focused and was about to snap his photo when Shelby charged forward and the grouse, with a great thunder of wings lifted. I missed the grouse in its upward flight but caught its friendly provider.

Grouse pecks beneath bowl
Flees photo racing dog breath
Spruce thrusts belly proud

Love the picture and the haiku!
Happy Arbor Day to you, and Shelby, too!
Wow.
Ehrm....... what are they, anyway?
.
Happy Arbor Day.
I know the odd lumps on trees as galls, which begin forming when insects or mites lay eggs and their larva feed on a tree. The tree produces hormones to combat the effects of the chemicals produced by the insects. Galls usually do not hurt the host tree. And as you noted, the wood in the gall is highly prized.
