There are two nice things that Home Depot has done for me this year that deserve sincere thanks.
1. The $50 gift card that I got through Gather, which I used to start up our container garden in the front yard. We are now beginning to enjoy our summer crop of basil, grape tomatoes, and jalapeno peppers. It is surprising how many dinners you can jazz up with those limited ingredients!
2. One June 24, Home Depot launched a nationwide program to accept used compact fluorescent light bulbs at EVERY location. So in a couple of years, when our family's CFL bulbs start to burn out, I will be able to drop them off five minutes down the road. CFL bulbs do contain minute traces of mercury, and it is reassuring that I will be able to gain the energy savings of using these bulbs without having to worry about disposing of them in an environment-friendly manner. For the details, see http://www6.homedepot.com/ecooptions/stage/pdf/cfl_recycle.pdf.
Note: Home Depot did NOT PAY ME to write this article. Well, okay, in a sense they did insofar as they sent me the $50 gift card when I reached the required number of gather points, but NO BRIBE changed hands. This article consists of unsolicited and freely given appreciation.
