GMO's are gentiacally modified organsims, that is a plant, animal or microorganism in which the genetic code had been altered to give it characteristics it does not have naturally. The most common traints in gentically modified crops are herbicide tolerance & insect resistance.
Monsanto's Roundup Ready soybeans are the most widely planted, genetically modified crop in the world.
91% of the 64 million acres of soybeans planted in the US in 2007 were a biotech variety planted, genetically modified crop in the world.
57% of genetically modified crops are soybeans. Corn is 25%, Cotton 13% & canola 5%.
4 out of 5 acres of gentically modified crops worldwide are Monsanto's Roudup Ready varieties, designed specifically for use with Monsanto's own herbicide, Roundup - big surprise there....
And listen to this: The Vatican recently updated the tradtional 7 deadly sins with 7 new, more modern "social" sins. Guess what is number 2 on the list...."genetic manipulation".
"Superweeds" are weeds that have developed resistance to herbicides used on genetically modified crops.
About that Candy Bar: Lecithin a common food emulsifier derived from soybeans, accounts for an estimated 80% of potential presence of genetically modified material in products on the Grocery store shelves.
Trying to stay away from GMO's is getting close to impossible these days. Unless you are eating & drinking & wearing organic.....you are getting some GMO's in your system.
You might think....how does this affect ME? Think about it, for 1 thing, we have no idea how GMO's are going to affect ourselves, our plant life cycles & our animal life cycle. But of course the government says it is safe....and that is all that matters to some people.
So what do you think? Should we continue to "MESS" with Mother Nature?

Well the big deal is butterflys are needed - they do their pollinating too! If we kill all the butterfly's, then who is going to pollinate? The dissapearing bees?
I am generally ok with the experiements and advancements.... but it is something hard to control.
I just think we need to step back and realize that we are not god.
( just my opinion)
very informative post with great information thanks for posting.
His opinion was that the countries we order from grow them in human feces. Not compost or animal waste from America, We have eaten fresh foods all our lives fertilized with natural fertilizer. But the imported vegetables are like eveything else, Contaminated more than likely.
On the note about flowers, if we alter flowers - the insects that pollinate them are altered as well - since the pollen is different.
And also, if the pollen is different, then the allergies are different and the medication's need to be altered.
It is all connected~
Good article though!
"Truth in labeling" only means what they can get away with by double-talk, obfuscation and misrepresentation.
Interesting article.
Grafting, pollinating....etc. are not harmfull to use, heck we do grafting at the nursery I work at. It's the act of changing the food into something all together different. Changing the food, changes the insects, changes the plants/crops around it, changes medicine, changes us.
I do drink soy milk - organic soy milk. And no, we shouldn't be messing with Mother Nature - she's not got a good sense of humor about things like this.
We are led to believe we are always alone in our feelings and misgivings about the changes in our world. If we were more vocal, and made more aware, we might be able to shape a world that we were sure is safe and sustainable for our children.
GMO's are hurting us, and will continue to hurt us - we need to act, each & every one of us.
