Just recently, I was looking at different things Google is working on and discovered the coolest thing i've seen in a while--Google transit www.google.com/transit.
It's just as easy as mapquest. Just put where you are, where you want to go, and when you want to get there, and it finds the easyest way to get there using public transportation. It also gives you how long it would take and how much it would cost, and how much a similar car trip would cost.
It's only in a limited number of areas, but it's expanding. Unfortunatley for me, it's not in New York, but suposedly google's working with the MTA on it, but what I read was in august, so who knows. Look to see in your area!
