Filling Our Bellies, Not Our Pockets at Burswood

The other day Magi suggested that we go to Burswood, the large Casino and Entertainment Complex in Perth.  Since neither of us gambles, I thought it was strange that he should suggest this place.  But he assured me that it was a fine place to people watch.  And so after we stopped at the Perth Mint in downtown Perth, checked out the Sisters of Mercy Convent (I think he thought of getting rid of me there.) and paid our respects at the Cathedral, we ambled over to Burswood.

First we checked out the casino....but alas, we couldn't take any pictures at the game tables or slot machines.  Then we checked out the menu at Carver's, an all you can eat buffet for $19.95 but Magi didn't like the setting or the fare.  So we walked over to the Atrium Restaurant and checked out their menu.  For the month of October they were offering a full luncheon buffet for $29.95 which looked far more appetizing then the Carvers.....a huge selection of Asian and Western inspired cuisine, fresh seafood, incredible salads and most importantly, irresistible desserts.

I can see that Magi is not getting any slimmer over the past few weeks ;)
We've got a Convent of Mercy here too, and I'd be the first reject after Bob, I"m sure.

How will you keep Bob down on the Farm after she's seen Perth(ee)?
Faith, when one cannot cook and is surrounded by food, food, glorious food ... one cannot help but put on the pounds - but all the pavement pounding that we've done has helped to counteract some of those calories.

I'd apply to join the Convent of Mercy but they wouldn't be that merciful. No apes allowed.

I won't be able to keep Bob on the farm or in Perth - next week she's going back to ice skate on the pond and shovel snow in North Carver.

Heard it snowed last Sunday in Boston....guess the Patriots had to put up with that white stuff in October. Seems almost unbelievable to me. But yes, come next Wednesday Spring will be over for me.

Actually we did eat a lot of food that was really good for us first...fresh fruit and veggie salads as well as all kinds of fish. But I must admit when I started taking pictures I ended up at the dessert station.

I'm not your uncle, Kathryn. Oh yeah, that's an ossie expression. We will be going back to Burswood one more time. I have found restaurants to be a tad expensive in Western Australia....so this buffet for $29.95 is a REAL bargain. Well worth it.....I just wish you could take a doggie bag with you.

All too soon...on the 28th I fly home. Today we went to Kalamunda up in the hills to do another bushwalk...then to the Rose Garden, a place we visited when I first got here. Spring has definitely sprung here....the garden center was filled with irises, roses, foxglove, etc all in bloom. People were buy fertilizers, mulch, and potting soil. Seemed so strange in October.

Roy, neither one of us cooks...well, Mag can do hamburgers, steaks and bacon and eggs....and I can make salads....but we have found having one meal out each day keeps up our stamina for hiking. Lol

Actually, Madame, we have had some incredible meals since I have been here. Magi's good friends, knowing how inept he is in the kitchen, have invited us over for dinner several times. Like you, I do enjoy, eating. I'm thinking that once I get home, I'm going to "try my hand in the kitchen". Afterall, look at it this way...there's definitely some really good teachers on Gather...you, Katrina Hall, Jan, Faith and the list goes on. When you finally get to Boston I very well might be able to present you with a full course meal.

My take on this is after all the hiking up and down and down and up, you probably can't help but lose some weight. Replenishment from time to time is a good thing. And I'll tell you a secret. There is a casino complex about 30 miles from here. They'd never see us if it were not for the buffet, and that's only the one at one casino, not the others.

LOL, you balanced out your day between the convent, the church, the mint and the casinos. What fun. I've stayed in a couple of convents from time to time, between 18 and 21, and I always had fun. But Sr. Pauline was always there, and I knew she'd take good care of me.
The best part was the lunch, Lynn. LOL

As yet, we haven't made it back to the Casino but that's one thing that is on the agenda before leaving next Wednesday morn.

Over the last couple of years there's been talk about the Wampanoag Tribe building a Casino near Cape Cod but there's been a lot of negative feelings about it so I doubt whether it will come off. But if it did, I certainly would go for the buffet.

This trip is going by too quickly. Magi, you might need to start up on your fantastic photo essays again. Bob's gotten us back into a habit of seeing Australia again.
The time has flown, Lynn. Bob will be flying out from here early next Wednesday morning.

I guess I could post a few more photo-essays ... between the two of us, we have now have some 5,000 shots of West Oz.

the architecture is amazing. i love people watching at casinos i- a lot of interesting characters (they probably think the same about me). i'm not fond of sea food, but that dessert plate would do me in.
People watching is the only thing we did at the casino itself, David.

The range of available desserts was unbelievable.

The casino as well as the whole complex is quite pleasing to the eye. Mag and I didn't explore all the gardens and the sculptures that day so we really do need to go back.

The convent wasn't bad....I liked the architecture...wouldn't mind staying there for awhile as long as the Sisters of Mercy let me do my own thing.

Oh I love a good casino! Used to go regularly in tropical far north Queensland to the Townsville Sheraton Breakwater Casino. It was a very laid back casino, with the door staff dressed in tropical shirts and khaki shorts (both male and female i should add, in a fine salute to non-gender specific staffing!) I could walk there from my modest sea-side flat and so it was my regular pub and a fine wee place it was to enjoy a flutter in the welcome airconditioning.. plus they were the only venue that understood beer should be served icy cold. Headache cold! I ate their once a year or so when friends demanded it of me, and i recall wonderful collations like those depicted here, but when in the vicinity of gaming, this was hardly a factor..

I can no longer enjoy such diversions of course, but I am pleased that those of my ilk subsidised your delicious luncheon! Bon Appetit!
People watching within the casino itself was interesting, Carolyn - for a while, and then there was a sameness to it. We were killing time until the restaurant opened its doors for the serving of lunch - and then it was on for young and old alike.

plus.. i can't believe the time has flown so quickly! Bob, while I suspect thoughts of home and hearth are welcome in many ways, it will still be a terrible jolt for you and certainly a great loss for Magi and the rest of us when you go home. Hopefully many other gatherers will be inspired to take the long journey southwards and come to our wonderful country. You've shown us in a very flattering light, you've inspired us to appreciate the natural wonders surrounding us, and you've brought such laughter and joy throughout your visit. Safe travels dear friend.

Though it will be fun to go home, I am definitely not looking forward to the flight, Carolyn. I can't sleep on airplanes....I find it hard watching movies....and so I spend a good part of the time wandering back to the loo.

I do hope our articles will inspire others to make the trip down under. You have a beautiful country...one well worth visiting.

Actually, we found just the opposite, RB. In Perth an evening meal in a good restaurant you are talking about $32-$40 dollars for the main meal...that doesn't include coffee and a dessert. For $29.99 we got an array of food... both hot and cold, as well as salads (I would say there were at least 12 different salads), fresh fruit and dessert.

Sounds like the casino is definitely a good place to eat. We have several casinos near here but the food isn't all that great in my opinion. I've never tried any of the buffets when I visited Las Vegas. I wander through and watch people throwing away money. That almost takes away my appetite!

Enjoyed all the pictures once again. I would HATE that flight home. I can never sleep on planes either.

I love the nice open areas and the lines of the buildings to compliment this area. The food looks delicious.

One of my friends belongs to Weight Watchers and may go to OZ, so I will suggest she go to this place to keep on her diet.

Wonderful looking food, but food in our Indian casinos around San Diego is about half as expensive. When Golden Acron had a buffet meals were actually free to seniors when you factored in all the bargains, and the quality was execellent. Now I don't think any meals are much over $20 and most are $9 to $15 but the quality deteriorated when they discontinued the buffet. I haven't sampled any other Indian casino food around here. There are a lot of them.
I am so very glad I ate before looking at this post! However, I must say those desserts have me pondering what sweets I have in stock. It all looks so good.
