can you hang something (piece of fabric, maybe) that's opaque enough to block the glare, but not all the light?

either that, or borrow someone's tripod!! :) if i had one, i'd let you borrow it.

i don't think i have a piece of fabric that big. i'll have to check with my roomate when she gets home.

i've tried all sorts of different light. the medium seems to pick up the slightest light source and glare the image. it's not bad on small pieces, but the larger ones are almost impossible to photograph.

It's a bit tricky and some times you have to wing it. What I mean is take a very large black cloth ( you can buy at Joannes Fabrics) place it over a clothes line (make it up) cut a small whole in the center enough ti fit your camera lens. The glare should be greatly reduced as well as obtrusive shadows. Finally you need to tilt your canvas slightly back until you see most of the glare from the varnish is removed. I've have tried this with very good results. ;-D

thanks sam. i tried the tilting thing, but then when i went to edit, i was losing too much of my image in the crop due to the warp.

renda, thanks, i'm still struggling with it though. been using a white table cloth to drape over me and the canvas to filter some of the light glare, but still have some.

I used to photograph old oil paintings. My suggestion is to take it outside when it is overcast. Prop it up against a tree and stand while you are shooting the photograph. Look through your viewfinder until you can't see any glare. That will help you to get the right angle.

chelle, tried that. doesn't work with the larger canvases and unless you like to crop off the ends of your painting, you will get a warp unless your camera is exactly level with the angle your painting is at. plus you end up with grass in the pic too.
