This song is almost iconic anymore--again I was suprised at the number of covers of this Depeche Mode song.
When it came out, "Personal Jesus" was a bit of a scandal, but fans of the band knew that this wasn't the first time Martin Gore had written about religion. ("Blasphemous Rumours" from Some Great Reward has offended a lot of people.)
Original:
Marilyn Manson:
Speaking of iconic...
Johnny Cash:
Lollipop Lust Kill (????):
And finally, something to make you laugh!
Richard Cheese, lounge lizard extraordinare:
So which do you prefer?

I'm gonna have to go for the DM version as my #1 pick, followed by Marilyn Manson. But really, this must be a difficult cover, because all of them pretty much sound the same. I don't care for the Johnny Cash one, I think he did NIN's "Hurt" much better. The Richard Cheese, though...that is pretty unbelieveable. Plus, there are tons of vids of him doing his version of songs: "Baby Got Back" (!), "Chop Suey" (SOD), "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and many, many more that will simply amaze and horrify you.
Yeah Johnny Cash's Hurt was so painful .... It was art.
I like Johnny Cash's version better than NIN. Trent was too young to sing something like that so he just comes off as a brat.
I didn't realize there were so many versions. I loved Blasphemous Rumors.
there's actually one or two more--but like I said, they all sound pretty much the same.
Yes I believe horrify for that one version is the correct word OMFG.
I'm going with Depeche Mode followed by Mr. Manson
Not familiar with this song at all
Johnny Cash!
I don't know why anybody is offended by this song or Blasphemous Rumors.
