Last Sunday we visited The Butterfly Place in Westford, Mass!
Here is the hatchery...

Some detail shots...

Here are baby Rice Butterflies drying off before release and first flight...

Baby Owl Butterflies and various cocoons...

Brown Clippers are yellow, like this beauty, or blue, beneath their patterns...

The Atlas Moth was most amazing...it is enormous, over six inches in diameter, and its wings, as I tried to display with the sunlight in the below shot, contain tiny windows, sort of like stained glass...

Doris; she sat still for me for more than a minute! Half the challenge is not being so excited that you move the camera, I think. She was one of my first shots and very patient with me...

There were so many Doris, I attribute this to the fact that they are fast flyers, and perhaps a little more adept than the larger species; I could tell by the longer legs and slimmer wings that Doris is a fast flyer...and able to elude human touch more effectively.

Do you think she is telling him not to touch the butterflies because the oil from their little fingers will eat away at the wings of the butterflies and weigh them down? I hope so...

I'm in the mood for Spring and Summer, for sure!

must be fabulous to visit a place like that and a terrific learning experience for kids.
I am surprised at you people. Did it occur to you that nature is not a place that we visit, but is in fact where we live?
Jennifer - that was wonderful! I'd heard about this place, but somehow never got there. Beautiful photos! Thanks for posting..............
Katrina, this is a great little spot to check out. They also have a plant area where you can BUY various plants to encourage butterflies in your yard.
Jennifer...I would love to visit that place in Mexico some day! Thanks for the tip!
Renda, thank you, too, for the tip on Callaway Gardens in Georgia!
