Granny's Gardening

My Granny's schooling never went beyond high school. She didn't write environmental policies or lobby for change or join political groups and leaders to fight social causes. She just did what needed to be done and through her actions and her personal touch, she enabled and enacted the finest and best environmental nurturing and protection. She did not need a government policy to remind her to share. She already knew to trade a bushel of her apples with a neighbor who had a bushel of peaches. She knew how to make a compost pile to feed the soil without the help of an environmental scientist. She wasted nothing. Plastic bread bags became boot liners and "gloves". Cardboard egg cartons grew seed and starter plants. Once her prized fruit and vegetables had been harvested, she baked pies for people in nursing homes and for people who couldn't get out much. She donated bushels of fruit to her local schools for the children. Today, it's important to have government policies, agencies, independent groups and sponsors to fund and provide as much attention as possible to earth & environmental issues. But in the end, the most effective change will happen home to home, hand to hand, heart to heart with every person making a personal commitmemt to love our neighbor and our earth as we do ourselves.
