All my life I've been devoted environmentalist. When four years ago moved outside the capital city of Warsaw, Poland I thought I'd find peace, quiet and full of harmony atmosphere that would make both people and wildlife happy. Even more - I was sure to find clean spot, because the place I choose to live in is exactly at the border of the National Park.
I was wrong.Soon I learnt, that the local inhabitants are not aware of the importance of the place they used to live in. They do not feel it's something special that need to be protected. Some of them treat forest in the way which for me is unacceptable - they dump the trash into the wood! When I do my jogging I can point the new fridges thrown away into the forest every spring. It's awful and disgusting.
Fortunately there are some environmentally conscious people among my neighbors too. Together we went to the mayor and told: "Listen, some peasants use to dump the trash into the wood!". But he replied "They did it all their life. You will never change it".
Isn't it a shame? In the middle of Europe? We decided to change it!Together with 20 neighbors we did "Citizens Forest Cleaning". For the whole day we collected the trash ourselves and using private cars transported it out of the forest. The hill of plastic bags with trash was few meters high!
If I was awarded a research trip and support, I'd like to share my ecological knowledge with the children in the schools in my neiborhood. Then they will explain at homes why it is so important to treat such "sacred places of nature" in the very special way. This would change the situation forever!Marcin Jamkowski
