I believe that Margaret Mead, a brilliant anthropologist, had profound insight into humanity and how we best function. Her quote encapsolates my live experience and excites me when we look to the future as a place of great abundance and resource. I know that personally, I must be the change I want to see in the world! I believe that it is my responsibility as a citizen of the world to live with integrity and transparency. One should know what values I support by observing the life I live. Ecological and environmental issues are new to my heart, yet I feel myself being changed as I embrace the possibility of living in a self sustainable style. While I may not always make the changes that would promote the most eco-friendly life, I must now be able to understand why I am choosing to make concessions. My conscience and my ego have been united, and I am transformed. And... as my actions change to be more in align with my values, I watch how my behavior impacts the life around me. My spouse and caretaker, by companion critters... by extended family must now confront new ideas and issues. I love the power each life has to touch and change hearts. It is a treasure that humanity often overlooks.
As a pacifist, a liberal Christian lesbian pastor, a disabled woman, a student and a social justice worker, I have lived my life knowing that the only way the world is changed is heart to heart. As Mead wrote that small groups transform, so it is; The hearts of one people encounter the hearts of another, and both groups are transformed by the interconnection. It is the most beautiful path to growth and healing for humanity and for our planet
Margaret Mead understood that it is when we engage each other heart to heart, and we allow that which defines us all to blossom, we stand together in the center of unquenchable power, and wonder and transformation. The world will never again be the same!
