Our one and only planet earth, our home, needs us.
Each and every one of us might be a friend the way we
honor earth in the rituals of daily life, buying local
produce, recycling, planting and gardening, using
public transportation or walking, buying in bulk to
minimize packaging, choosing products made from
recycled materials, choosing to buy products made by
companies with sustainable practices.
We are the ones the earth has been waiting for. As
Margaret Mead said,"Never doubt that a small group of
thoughtful, devoted citizens can change the world;
indeed it is the only thing that has."
We might inspire others in the community by
supporting public parks and preserves, recycling programs, public transportation, the
use of biofuels for school buses and public vehicles,
sponsoring speakers and fairs on new technologies, and
sustainable energy practices, earth days to plant
trees or clean up litter, installing recycling in
fast food restaurants, and sponsoring nature trips for
school children.
But finding a way to live in harmony with the
earth requires us first to look inside ourselves, to
find a source of connection and passion for our
relationship with the earth, wind and sky, from which
our purpose and activities with others might arise.
I like photography, as a way of seeing, and
connecting to the earth. I like gardening and getting
my hands in soil. I like riding the bike trail through
the country and feeling the wind in my hair. I like
the majesty of a single tree. I like the powerful,
sweeping rhythms of the ocean crashing against the
shore. I like birdsongs and winter sunsets from my
kitchen window. I like crocus blooms bursting through
the cracked soil of winter and the reckless blooming
of daylilies in summer.
And I come back to places in the wilds of my
backyard, at the sea, and on mountain trails for
renewal, for inspiration, and for peace enough to want
to give back something of these gifts.
Come, join me.
