The end of a long and tumultuous week in Idaho politics and across the nation came this morning when Senator Craig announced his resignation from the US Senate! In front of a moderate group of people at the old Boise Train Depot, Craig said he didn’t feel he could pursue his legal options and give the people of Idaho popper representation in the Senate. He thanked his supporters and family and announced he would resign effective September 30, 2007.
While this saga has ended, there are interesting lessons to be learned from the events and reactions to the events leading to this resignation. The first and most obvious is that, regardless of your many sins, the one thing that can undo one the quickest is sex. Especially homosexual sex or the appearance of such. Craig has long been a critic of homosexuality and gay rights, helping in the passage of a constitutional amendment in the State of Idaho prohibiting gay marriage.
This long standing criticism seems to have brought charges of hypocrisy from many sides with the gay critics feeling he did wrong by persecuting them and others feeling that he fell from grace by apparently attempting to solicit gay sex, making him one grade lower than the proverbial serpent’s belly. So a lesson to be learned here is that even though all of us are hypocritical at times and a politician must be a hypocrite if he is going to get elected, keep in mind that your constituents will hang you for that in a New York minute!
Another lesson to be learned is that, for Republicans at any rate, you can count your friends on your fingers unless you have a very large family! Craig’s fellow Republican senators were the first to jump on the band wagon and literally put the screws to Craig. Closely coupled with Mitt Romney’s rapier like swordsmanship in skewering him like a rare steak!
And finally, remember that there is no such thing as a secret if two people know it! The officer may well have kept his word and not called the press but someone sure did! And that left Craig in a very vulnerable situation with a guilty plea on the record. I’ve no doubt, supported by the previous attorney general of Idaho, that Craig would have won had he plead not guilty. But by agreeing to the lesser charge he removed the element of doubt for many and left the specter of the greater sin to be considered as true.
As a person who has consistently voted against Craig here in Idaho, I can take no pleasure from his downfall in this instance. At the very worst, had he walked up to the officer and said "how about some gay sex" and it was captured on tape, it would have been a personal problem and on his own time. Second, not being familiar with the ways of soliciting gay sex anywhere, at least some of the horrendous acts he committed are acts anyone might, such as placing his bag inside the stall and tapping his foot. I’d never heard of these things having any significance until last Monday! But you can bet, I’ll be very careful not to tap my foot in a restroom from now on!
But the most saddening thing to me was the way Craig was deserted by his own "friends" in the party, almost instantly, and without a second look back. Talk about hypocrisy, those "friends" exhibited a level of hypocrisy that put anything Craig did to shame! Publicly, on the national scene, the Democrats refrained pretty well from jumping on the ill timed bandwagon but the Republicans certainly made up for it.
For the sake of the Senator and his family, and for the State of Idaho, I’m glad it’s over. But for any opponent of Senator Craig who thinks they have gained I can assure them that is not likely! The most widely believed appointee by the Governor is Jim Risch, a conservative who is even more viscous and dedicated than Larry Craig and who wants to be Senator. This will allow him, should he be selected, to run in 2008 as an incumbent and virtually guarantee Idaho’s continued Republican strangle hold on Idaho’s Washington delegation in perpetuity.
It’s been a sorry week and not one to be proud of. I, for one, am glad it’s over and hopefully, we’ve learned another lesson in just how dirty the business of politics can be!

After all most would carry their bags into the stall with them when travelling alone, although I certainly wouldn't put anything I valued on the floor of an airport restroom. *eww* you never know what's on those floors!
The whole problem as far as I'm concerned is that the so called"Moral Majority" has stuck their noses into every-body's bedrooms with no justification what so ever. Privacy has no meaning to them and the ultimate hypocrisy is in doing those things that you condemn others for doing!
I'd like to think this might encourage Republicans to leave all bedroom doors unopened, but I don't have that kind of confidence. Well, it's their call. Step right up and be the next Foley/Vitter/Craig...
I don't believe for one minute that everyone is a hypocrite or that every politician must be, and think that the person who makes a statement about "everyone is" anything is admitting that that is what he/she is and hoping others will buy it as a universal condition.
Appreciate your comments and agree that the "Moral Majority" has done a great disservice to our nation and our society!
Thanks a lot for stopping by!
Kris,
I certainly hope your are right! We don't need any more of that from Republican holier than thou types as far as I'm concerned. But I'm sure there will be more, unfortunately. One can't live their life without error and when you preach that it will com home to haunt!
Appreciate your stopping by and commenting!
Sandy,
I appreciate your comments!
I would disagree with one thing and that is I don't think anyone can get elected without some hypocrisy and especially as a republican. And I think that anyone who says they are not a hypocrite about some things needs to examine themselves very closely. If they truly are not, they belong to another species. It take a little humility to admit to human failings and we've all got them. You, I, and Larry Craig! This is part of what got Craig in trouble, he couldn't come up with that bit of humility!
Life would be so much simpler if we didn't feel the need for excuses I suppose but that is not going to change on my account, I'm sure!
Some of us lack the ability to just shut out the ugly things in our lives that we don't want to acknowledge, but if you can do it life will be simpler for you as people who are more introspective and honest with themselves suffer the curse of truly knowing themselves, whether they like it or not!
His generation kept homosexuality in the closet. Again, I don't have the numbers, but I bet thousands of gay men and women married and had families to hide their true feelings and selves from those that would persecute them for their "difference". If he wanted to be in public office, of course he's going to publicly denounce homosexuality. That's what his constituents in The Bible Belt would expect and demand.
So now he's out(allegedly). What do we REALLY expect him to say? He's acting like any normal person who has been caught in a lie that they are not ready to acknowledge, that could end life as they know it.
I say sure, he should be resigning just for stepping outside of the law, even if he didn't at this point, because his credibility is shot. I just don't think we should villify the man for his past comments on being gay and homosexuality. He was conditioned by a society that had as still doesn't have any respect or tolerance for "different".
I'm sorry it ended this way for him and I hope he finds some truth for himself and his family. The public be damned. They'll believe what they want regardless.
Very well said! I concur that the public has no more purpose in this. Craig needs to solve his own problems in private.
I appreciate you stopping by and commenting!
I am not versed in the ways of soliciting gay sex in bathrooms, but certainly got an education about it when reading the Roll Call paper that first reported the incident. Apparently this code and signals are posted on a gay website along with the best airports to hook up in. ( I lead such a sheltered life!)
That being said, I agree with the others who already commented.....it's the hypocrisy that aggrivates me so much. For the last 6-8 years we have had to listen to the Moral Majority and Christian Coalition tell us that we as liberals are unworthy and "our" God was not nearly as good as "their" God. Call me old-fashioned, but I thought they were the same God. Anyway, if we didn't denounce premarital sex, extra-marital sex, homosexuality....notice a sexual theme here?...... etc. etc, we would go to hell. Apparently the GOP only thought these rules applied to liberals and Democrats. I am beginning to think Republicans are sexually repressed, and somewhere along the way of all their preaching, they forgot the Ten Commandments.
Keep me posted on the events in Boise, James....I'd love to get and "insider's" point of view!
I agree with you James that he probably did nothing wrong and should have stuck to his guns and fought the charges. He would have won, I think.
What exists on earth is diversity and difference where each person and thing is actually unique where no two are exactly alike. Yet because of this 'dualistic' concept of perfection VS all else, everyone seeks to portray themselves on the side nearer to perfection ... they will do almost anything to appear 'better/ than they think they really are ... thus the lying hypocrisy and role playing. The ego so wants to appear to be more than it thinks it is, to be better than ... ... ...
The truth is that God created each of us a unique individual with different traits of many kinds. God's idea of Perfection is then the Truth of what each naturally is in relationship with God and each other, a form of trinity with the Spirit of God right in the very center of every truth, every real and honest person that does not play a role involving lying and hypocrisy.
Thus IF everyone knew and accepted the truth of God, they could each and all just be themselves and thus be Perfect as God is in relative comparison. Perfection just being true to yourself and honest about it ... God asks nothing more from creation ... then there would be none of that role playing and we would all just accept each other based on truth and we would then maybe have a perfect world that would recognise and honor it's Perfection.
Thanks for the comments! Yes, I have had a ring side seat for all the festivities. I hate to think about Craig's replacement as I know the players involved and there is none that I see as an improvement. I've wanted Craig out of there for a long time but he was dumped for the wrong reasons which is never good. I understand he will retire on something like $110,000 a year so he really has no significant worries!
Joe,
Appreciate your comments! The local word is that Craig is definitely going to try to get the plea rescinded and fight this things. Getting a plea rescinded is very difficult so the opportunity may have passed him by when he entered the guilty plea.
Thanks for stopping by and reading this!
Jerry,
Thanks for stopping by and offering the very good comments! It strikes me that perfection is the same thing as diversity. I recall being told by an evangelical Christian that in heaven, all things are white as that is the color of true perfection. I responded that I could not imagine a God who would rob us of the beauty of diversity! To give up flowers with their colors, etc. would, to me, be unthinkable and bland!
Appreciate you thoughtful comments and perspective. I can't disagree with anything you've said nor would I want to. I do feel that you've jumped to the conclusion that Craig is, indeed, homosexual, and that may or may not be true. I lack the information to make that call and so does everyone except the senator.
For may part, I regret the entire messy scene and wish Larry Craig and his family well in wherever they go from here. Local papers report that Craig's son says that they have had a long talk and that he believes his father that nothing improper happened. Also, Craig is probably going to attempt to have the guilty plea set aside. Time will tell and it is strictly their personal business at this point.
Thanks again, Raven.
popper representation
Considering "poppers" are the drug of choice for many rest room homosexuals, this typo/misspelling takes on an ironic twist of meaning. *chuckle*
a politician must be a hypocrite if he is going to get elected
Pretty cynical, and I don't believe it for a minute.
Craig's fellow Republican senators were the first to jump on the band wagon and literally put the screws to Craig.
As it should be when wrongdoing is uncovered. Too bad the democrats nearly always take a completely opposite path, and seek to hold onto the corrupt individual as long as possible.
For the sake of the Senator and his family, and for the State of Idaho, I'm glad it's over
Interesting isn't it, from the luxury of hindsight, how once seemingly solid statements of "truth" no longer ring true at all, and even seem to be diametrically opposed to the current reality?
I for one am VERY glad the republicans sought to oust a law breaker from his position.
Apparently the GOP only thought these rules applied to liberals and Democrats.
Hardly, as has been pointed out, the republicans were the first to move in removing the law breaker from office.
Liz, you people still promoting the idea of "born that way" really need to take another look at the facts.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting! I must have made that type just for you to make your point! However, gay bathroom behavior is probably my area of least knowledge. However, I know now not to tap my foot or get my hand down low in the bathroom, for sure! That putting your roller bag in front of you, I can't think where else I might put it.
When Craig screwed up it was the party leaders who figuratively threw him under the bus before he could even think of explaining. And in pushing him to resign, they are pushing to eliminate the elected representation of the State of Idaho citizens.
I've never been a fan of Craig's and have voted against him each time he has run. But the large majority of Idaho citizens did vote for the man and are entitled to have him represent them. His position of the finance committee in the next 18 months, will be valuable for the State of Idaho.
He is a hypocrite, not a thief, child molester or other serious felon. The republicans would have had no problem with all this if it had not been related to homosexuality.
I'm curios jJack, since you describe yourself as straight, when did you make the decision that you would be straight? For me there was never a decision to make as girls interested and intrigued me from about three years on! I can't imagine a man "choosing" to be homosexual. In our society that means choosing a lifetime of problems, of choosing to be an outcast and choosing to cut one's self off from many friends and probably some family. Talk about a tough choice!
I thank God that neither I, nor any of my three sons were inflicted with this "choice!"
Yes, I saw your video. It is truly odd that I find myself being supportive of Craig in this incident when I've never voted for him and don't like his holier than thou, self righteous stance on so many things. I guess I don't hate him as bad as his Republican "friends."
My comment about politicians being hypocrites is not cynical, it is realistic due to the outward appearances the public demands of it politicians. None of them can be completely open and honest if he or she wants to be elected. Not the fault of the candidates, but the fault of the electorate!
I make that decision every time I decide who I'll "poke."
In our society that means choosing a lifetime of problems, of choosing to be an outcast and choosing to cut one's self off from many friends and probably some family
So what ?? The same could be said of drug addicts, or criminals. They ALSO make bad decisions that affect their lives in a negative, destructive way as well. Are you suggesting they aren't making a choice when they commit a crime?
There is AMPLE examples of people making "bad decisions" and I see no reason not to include homosexuals in the same group.
I don't hate Larry Craig either, I simply recognize him as the pervert hypocrite he is, and cannot imagine why anyone would believe someone engaging in such self destructive behavior is qualified to serve the nation in Congress.
I'm sorry, I also can't accept your notion of all politicians being hypocrites, particularly because you suggest that otherwise, they could not be elected.
Always glad to have you stop by and express your thoughts!
I realize that many people think homosexuality is a choice. Of course, none of them are homosexuals. I do think that women, in particular, may actually choose it if they have been in a drastic enough incident to scare or anger them from men. I've met a few of these over the years and their feelings about men are evident.
However, these are exceptions to the rule. I know I don't make any decision to be heterosexual. Just imagine the fun I'd miss if I went the other way! You know, kind of like, do you want a shot of fine wine or would you prefer a smooth glass of battery acid?
I respect your opinion but you should be able to tell me when the "choice" was shown or appeared to you a little more definitively.
Persons who seek sex in public bathrooms are not just "homosexual" or any other orientation. They are surely perverse. Being heterosexual, I don't want sex with a total stranger under the partition in a public bathroom!
However, Craig was elected by the people of Idaho for a six year term. He has an obligation to the people who voted for him, which I did not, to serve out his term. If he should commit a crime where he is incarcerated, obviously he would not be able to serve. But disorderly conduct has little accurate meaning and his paying the fine satisfies societies requirements. Again, I've voted against Craig in every statewide election he has run so I never though he was adequately qualified to serve the State of Idaho. Isn't Idaho great? The most Republican state in the nation? And, I believe that a majority of people in the GOP in Idaho still support Craig!
People do indeed make bad decisions. However, these decisions almost always are to give them pleasure, happiness, money, etc. rather than to implement a life of misery. I can actually speak only for myself and there was never a question of sexual orientation in my entire life, no choice to make.
If someone had to make that choice, it would tell me that there was a problem there for it to even be a choice. Thank God I was not so inflicted!
I appreciate you acceptance of the idealized notion that a person can be open and honest about all things and still get elected! Hang onto that dream and perhaps someday it will come true, we'll both hope.
Thanks for the comments jJack!
And, would you not then say, they are making self destructive CHOICES ????
But disorderly conduct has little accurate meaning and his paying the fine satisfies societies requirements.
Arent YOU the one always saying, "Our country, being the exampe of freedom, should be better than that?" As an elected official, shouldn't we expect EXEMPLARY behavior from them, and therefore, if they commit ANY crime, be removed from office?
I believe that a majority of people in the GOP in Idaho still support Craig!
Much like your belief about the USSC has no real basis in the law, does your believe here, have any real basis in reality, or are you just stating an unfounded opinion again?
However, these decisions almost always are to give them pleasure, happiness, money, etc. rather than to implement a life of misery
And yet-- misery is exactly what a great many homosexuals find, isn't it? Teenage suicde rates are much higher for homosexuals than their heterosexual counterparts, and it holds true for the adult population as well.
What exactly is it, do you believe that drives them to suicide? Is it just because of the way society treats them, reacts to them, or could it possibly be self loathing at work?
And we haven't even said anything about prison populations. How would you explain that ?? Are all of the men engaging in homosexual activity in prisons, born as homosexual ??? I highly doubt it, and yet, there it is-- homosexual behavior in prisons, with a great many of those men, if not all, going back to heterosexual behavior once released back into the public.
There is nothing "idealized" about my belief a person can be honest about what he believes, and not be elected. You and I have both seen this in action, in our lifetimes.
Ronald Reagan is a fine example of a man that spoke his mind, regardless of the consequences to his political fortunes. In fact, he has one of the highest ratings of all presidents to have ever served in modern history.
Excellent commentary! Yes, those who would seek gay sex, or any other kind, in public bathrooms are making a very bad choice. Like I said, this is representative of perversion. We seem to agree so, your point would be?
Your second selected line represents a basic conundrum of politics today. Yes, I'd agree that office holders should be held to a higher standard. But what is that standard? Perfections? Not realistic. Near perfection? Sounds good but what is the exception from perfection?
Where I separate it is in relation to their office and their public duties. Clinton having sex of a sort with an adult intern or Jefferson fathering a baby with a slave girl are not necessarily related to their duties. Someone hitting on underage pages in the congress is stepping over the line, professionally and legally.
What would ANY crime, in your opinion, encompass? Running a stop sign? Forgetting to pay a parking infraction ticket by the appointed time? Or exactly what? If it encompasses all of these then I would say you're looking for perfection. That's OK, but better take a picknic lunch!
Your point on this is well taken and valid although it is on our part, purely subjective.
I made the mistake again of hitting the "enter" key before I was through or even had a chance to spell check!
To continue, my feelings about Craig and his support in Idaho is from living in Idaho. His old hometown rolled out the red carpet and said he'd been railroaded! His defense has been much more vocal here than across the nation. He's held two hour long TV interviews where he was given time to explain, etc. They all sounded the same. But nevertheless, he does have considerable support in Idaho.
Don't forget, this is the state that is the strongest Republican in the nation. That means a high percentage of people who don't want to think things through if the results might be contrary to what they want to believe! It's also the state that sent Steve Symms to Washington for years. And now sends "repeal the law of gravity" Bill Sali to congress. A great place to live if you forget about politics or decent wages!
On the matter of choosing homosexuality, you've just reiterated what I said. Their suicide rate might well be related to self loathing, inability to fit in, poor prospects for the future, and ostracism by the public. Who knows? I actually see it as a combination of all the negative factors.
A person can be relatively honest about what he believes and still be elected. However, it helps, in the Republican party especially, if he keeps totally quiet about certain things and carefully nuances all other statements. Regan somewhat said what he thought but was careful to avoid press conferences and frankly, didn't always know what he was saying or what he believed other than he had hight ideals for mankind and America. He was a great American and a perfect Republican president because once he was elected he couldn't find his way to the bathroom without the party leading him by the hand! Carter was another example of someone who stated what he believed in and got elected. Ford, in his presidential years, stated a lot of what he thought was right but it got him out of office when he ran. As close as those three came to being non hypocritical, I have to admire them for it.
However, the idea that politicians often get away with being strait shooters and honest in their wordings and actually express all their own honest feelings is rather naive for as knowledgeable a person as yourself. Again, I would like to see your idealized concepts here become the absolute of politics and campaigns!
Appreciate the good points and arguments you've made jJack!
I'll concede that your idealism in this matter is admirable! How's that?
I'll also concede that Craig has problems I'm damned glad aren't mine!
And they did it in the flash of an eye! Craig was dumped by the party so fast he didn't have time to say boo!
