Everybody has a certain style. Mine could be described as spontaneous, enthusiastic, passionate, revealing, sometimes too loud and often out of bounds. That's exactly how I like my debates. Oh, Gwen Ifill did an excellent job, all things considered. She broke her ankle a few days ago and then there was the pre-debate whippin' she took for moderating while being black. The latter had to constrain her psychologically, as all PBS people pride themselves on being fair, balanced and unbiased. The actual debate left me asking, Where's the Beef?
The real test of a Vice President is not whether he or she can memorize rhetoric and spout it from cliff notes, but rather if that person has the disposition and knowledge to take over for the president in case of death or disability. I don't see Sarah as having what it takes, but that's just my impresson. I have to admit I really like Biden, in spite of an occasional unguarded remark. To me that means he is an authentic person who isn't always scheming, or in other words, a normal human being.
I tend to trust people like Biden more because of those thoughtless remarks. Most politicians are too sly to be caught in what the press has called Biden's tendency for verbal gaffes. Besides, who wouldn't like a man who described Rudy Guliani's debating style as 'A noun, a verb and 9/11'?
Biden is about twenty years older than Palin but seven years younger than John McCain. She passed a snarky remark in that passive aggressive way, with a big smile on her face, attempting to diminish him because he is an older man. It annoyed me actually, as I thought it was the kettle's handle calling the pot black. I find Biden to be a witty, gracious, loyal and passionate figure. If he died his hair he would look seven years younger, but he is not afraid to be who he is. Imagine.
He has overcome tragedy in his life and somehow managed to maintain his middle class values. While having been exposed to the Washington, D.C., cesspool of questionable behavior and ethics for decades, he has never been corrupted by it. So when I say I was relieved he didn't attack Sarah Palin - after all, it would not be a fair fight - I never really expected him to beat up on her.
After they both warmed up, it was obvious there were not going to be any fireworks. I was surprised to learn that Sarah's extended family had its share of school teachers, which included her father and brother. That was just a general curiosity, as although she talked about the importance of education, it has not seemed to be a family value evidenced in her own home.
The format, however, was the biggest problem for me. The two minute answers presented a restriction to challenging each other in any real way. That made the entire concept of debating seem more like the format of a national geography competition but without the intensity the kids bring to the podium.
Sarah Palin did almost as well as I thought she would, but that is because I had such low expecations. Of course, she could not help releasing a bit of the passive aggressive snarkiness for which she is so well known in Alaska. Most of the time she was effectively playing to the camera, stringing cliches into sentences and acting like a politician's parrot. Her attempts to repeat the 'straight talking points' from McCain's campaign whenever she didn't want to answer something - or I assumed didn't know how to answer - were transparent.
When she did not want to talk about a specific subject and said she would not answer the questions she didn't want to answer, I was rather appalled. Her justification? She wanted to talk to the 'American People', the 'Viewers', the 'hockey moms' and the 'Joe 6-packs' directly, without the pundits and commentators. In other words, she wanted to give a speech without interruption. We know she's good at that, but what we need to know is if she can think on her feet. A president is not always going to have a life coach there to help him or her prepare. He or she has to be able to think and act decisively and independently.
The Media, which she has managed to avoid since her initial two interviews went so badly, would love to give her a forum. Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow are going to offer to have her on their shows, in good faith, if she agrees to answer 20% of their questions. Yes, this was said in jest, but what is the point of going on television in what was called a 'debate' and then refusing to answer the questions you don't like?
Okay, so if they were personal questions? Like about Trooper/Brother-in-law Gate or her religious beliefs, I would say she was within her rights, but she is asking us to vote for her so I believe she really does need to tell us her views.
Biden did well too. He restrained his answers, didn't go on too long - who could, there were flashing lights when the two minutes were almost up - and he was passionate without being a bully. I thought he comported himself like a gentleman, and I will be proud when he is vice president. I liked how Biden gave details and specifics, although some others thought this was 'boring' in the first half hour. I don't think the average person was bored, however, as most of us don't really know government policy that well or have time to study all the issues. We rely more on general information, our own research and certainly our favorite commentators who we expect to properly guide us.
All in all, it was interesting, but certainly not riveting. That's okay too. I think with Obama's poll numbers rising across the country I can't take too much more excitement anyway. Besides, a Thursday? We are all too wiped out from working all week to really give a damn. Now Fridays are a whole different story. That's party time!
In summary, people who like Palin, and think a president or vice president should be as dumb as we are... well, they'll like her that much more after tonight because she only wanted to talk at us.
Those who are not crazy about Biden, but think he is a great counterpoint to Palin will certainly be proud of his demeanor and performance, but I am a little disappointed. I was hoping he'd get out a few real zingers at McCain while he had the whole country watching. He got out facts and figures, of course, but we need a catchy phrase like the Guliani putdown. Then again, I still thought he was great anyway as he seemed so calm and intelligent, so sue me.
After all, as Joe said, this is the most important election in our lifetimes. Certainly, it wasn't the most important debate by any means.

I shall have to give you a real 'shout-out' for this post!
Palin exceeded expectations. But her forced recitation of talking points had the air of, as Chris Matthews pointed out, someone reciting at a spelling bee.
I'll get back to ya on this one.
I suppose charm has a lot to do with how we perceive candidates on TV, but that is a matter of taste, not professional judgment.
To me, Palin comes across like fingernails on a chalkboard.
The MSNBC poll as of this morning had 78 percent for Biden and 19 percent for Palin, only slightly changed from immediately after the debate. That is a CLEAR victory for Biden.

My early, short analysis — now — before the punditry un-purifies me …
Last night was a superior debate AND performance than between Barack and John. As a competitive debate, in other words, as regards questions, answers, proofs, supporting proofs, rebuttal, etc., Biden kicked her ass — hands down.
BUT —
and this is HUGE —
as a communicative performance to TV Boobus Americanus Joe Six-Pack, Palin was über-effective beyond all base expectations. She put her Gidget/Mommie package to work early and often. She bored with her eyes into the camera, cocked her head furtively (when timely) and drilled into to the shallow cortex of the Booboiserie. Alas, as a result she will be judged a winner in the court of public opinion because, in part, expectations were so low … and beauty queen cute wins! Americans don't know debate from chopped liver.
? And then this, from my pet peeve perspective. Those two countries (Iraq and Iran) are pronounced Ihr-rahk and Ihr-rahn ... NOT... Eye-Rack and Eye-Ran . This linguistic barbarism makes me apoplectic with irritation, and is the telling hallmark of the Booboiserie .
The pestilence of Cruella de Wasilla is still among us.
Oh the humanity !

I wondered why she was not answering the questions and going off on the "I want to speak to the people twist" until it finally hit me -
After each and every question she would immediately look down shuffling notes - and I finally decided when she did that she was looking for the scripted answers to that question. WHEN she found it she looked up and grinned. When she didn't find it, she "talked to the people" repeating the Alaska Stories we all know by heart.
I didn't stay for the re-hashing of the speech because I want to know how many of the facts on both sides were inflated to make the debate sound good and figured this morning we would know.
Thank you for this Elizabeth.
Everyone appreciates your posting this to About Sarah Palin Watch click here
The lady has no idea that she is bringing in votes they should get and really running away from the moderate independent.
Darn right, betcha. Ding, Ding. Dial George Bush. We've heard this before.
As Marilyn said, if it was on the script, she read the first line and carried on with her memory of the reharsal. If it was not, she went on with Alaska, reform, gave checks to everyone, take on the good old boys. It's been five weeks of that. Can she sustain it for 4 and half more? No. We will need concrete answers. Some display of command on the issues.
Doggone good Palin. Good for your base.
Now on Joe Biden to be honest I didn't know a lot about him before finding out he was to be Obama's running mate. I thought he did great. I think he will be the passion that Obama's calm needs. I think the two of them will be a formidable team. I think it was plainly obvious he knew what he was talking about, he knows the basics and he not Palin could start the job on the ground running.
Understand they already love her. All they wanted her to do was show that she can stand up there and be coherent for 90 minutes, somewhat defend McCain. Also she needed to avoid debating Biden on the merit of issues. She can't win that. We all know that. So, she went at it with what she could win and she scored some points.
However, 24-48 hours later, the question remains. Can you trust this woman if this 72 year old man goes down? My answer is still no and that's why I am not voting for this ticket.
The reasons I am not voting for Obama are totally different.
Another thing Palin did not do and I thought she could have is display she knows something about being a conservative a little bit. After not remembering a single case from the Supreme Court she disagreed with, she had to do that. Then she went on and agreed with Obama and Biden on giving gays all rights possible without defining marriage.
How can that please ANY conservative?
Other things. Government is the problem, government should stay out, then she turns around and says we need more regulation of the market. That's ludicrous.
I was amazed that she got so much credit from the CNN "best political team." I guess the bar was set so low a vole could get over it. But, well, she didn't make a fool of herself and was attractive and lively, and appeared "real" so a committed party loyalist will be reassured and will feel better about voting the way they always intended to do. So in that sense, she came out okay.
If you are looking for substance, however, Biden thrashed her.
Palin is a phony. That she had to spend days in seclusion being programmed with talking points in order to undo the mess she created for McCain with her incoherent answers to interview questions should speak for itself. That she performed better than the low expectations that were widely circulated, some by her own campaign, only means that she is a quick study all right -- "How long have I been at this, like five weeks ...?" is also telling. And then, the statement that in a McCain/Palin administration, the VP would have more power .... oooohhh boy! And we think Cheney was the most dangerous VP in American history. Watch out!
I had never heard Joe Biden speak except in sound bites. He is a smart man with a lot of experience. I like him. He will make an excellent vice-president and an excellent President if the need arises.
All the more reason to vote for Obama/Biden.
After this debate, the salient fact remains, that Governor Palin is not ready to seat one heartbeat away from the most powerful chair in the world and Senator Biden is.
I'm reposting this poignant pix from your previous article because so many here NEED to begin dealing internally with the reality about what is about to happen.
The time is now for BARACK-to-The-Future. He's NOT white, he's NOT like you (probably) and he is about to get in ... over all odds and against your will. Time to deal with it, chilrunz.
They are on their way to the White House!
Hilary,
Joe,
and Michelle
after they found out who McCain’s running mate was going to be.
# 51 percent say Democratic Sen. Joe Biden wins VP debate, 36% say Gov. palin did
# Republican Gov. Sarah Palin exceeds expectations, 84 percent say, 64% say Biden did too!
# Palin beats Biden on likability, 54-36%
# 87 percent say Biden is qualified for job, 42 percent say Palin is.
I guess what it comes down to is this. If we want to like the candidate as the only criteria on which we vote, the majority finds Palin's Gidget/Mommie routine wins (thank you Ken Grisnak for this wonderful moniker!)
However, if Americans think that this country needs all the help it can get to climb out of this horrid slump/crash/backslide, the result of 20 years of deregulation and wild west corporate and government behavior... then it is clear that 87% of this country thinks Biden has added real experience to the Obama ticket.
The surprising thing about this debate, frankly, is how few people have actually heard Joe Biden speak. He is a passionate, caring person who embodies all the qualities one would want in their own father, husband or son. I find Biden one of the most refreshing personalities in politics. He has a global understanding of foreign policy and the suffering that our current policies - or lack thereof - have on other countries. He is also perhaps the most compassionate and active in congress with regard to international problems like that in the Darfur camps.
I can't believe anyone doesn't see his passion. Maybe because it is heartfelt instead of canned they don't recognize it? The man is passionate, informed, and strong. I always look forward to his input and questions in hearings because he isn't there to please anyone - he is looking for the truth. I respect and appreciate him very much for that.
Is anyone familiar with "Being There" by Jerzy Kosinski? It was made into a movie with Peter Sellers and Shirley MacLaine. In it, a simple-minded gardener accidentally becomes involved in Washington politics, where his words are considered to hold great truths--but in reality, he is just a doofus in the right place at the right time.
Kosinski could have been describing Sarah Palin, given what I saw last night.
This is not for Entertainment, People. It is for becoming informed and therefore, better voters. If you want entertainment, try E! Tonight. Where, by the way, you will see and hear all about Sarah Palin who has replaced Sen. Obama as the heir apparent of the Celebrity Worshipers. Of course, they focus on her cutting remarks and her looks, but afterall, what else has she to offer us.
My comment for the banner ad suggestion in CA was "Sarah Palin for President 2048" when she just might possibly be ready.
I have been a McCain supporter for a long time but he will not receive my vote as he voted along with the majority of which Obama was included on this bailout.
I'll wait for Palin to run at the top of the ticket before I throw my support behind another repubican
How can she simultaneously have to learn a lot in a short time AND have all of this foreign policy experience? Does she simultaneously exist in two alternate universes? It's one or the other. Either YES, she has the knowledge and experience to be a heartbeat from the presidency, or NO she does not. You can't have it both ways.
I kept waiting for her to answer a direct question...
Excellent post - thank you. Salud
She's a fool and probably not even qualified to be my office assistant. The first time I heard her say nuculer, we would have a problem Houston.
She's a slap in the face to intelligent, qualified Republican women.
She's a chatty Cathy.
I think Palin did very well going up against Biden, she held her own. Although, I did find the down home corn pone act wore thin and got old quickly...it was usually when she didn't want to answer a question and had to think of something else to say quickly.
I don't care for either Presidential candidate. I wish we could vote on VP instead. I'd pick Biden hands down.
allegedly) who can read could mispronounce a word like that.
Thank you for your thoughtful post though.
