And What About The Status Line?

You can put a line designating your status (Gather example "I am Happy") and it shows up on your namespace.







 







What is with the juvenile aspects of this latest upgrade?  Who exactly does gather think their key demographics are - teeny-boppers?  Between the status line and the online autograph book they have added I feel like I am back in Mrs. Einstein's six grade class - and yes, that really was her name.







 







It sure would be nice if they would put their time and effort in things like matter -







 







Like - eliminating the Gather Glitches, making the publishing interface more user friendly, adding a spell checker, allowing us to edit our comments, making the point system a little more transparent so we know what is going on, banishing the duct tape option.







 







This is just the usual gather crappy, cosmetic change.  No wonder they are so proud??????

There is an online autograph book? Are you kidding? I'm still trying to figure out what the ping thing is that people are talking about.
If I had taken the time to write a real article today, I'd be damned upset about this formatting problem. They never seem to be able to make what they deem an upgrade without totally ruining something else.

oh, I don't know if I would go that far. As I see it, Gather and Gather employees are just trying to the best that they can. Now, I do not agree with the pinging thingy but thats just me. However, a spell checker on Gather not on a browser would be a welcomed feature.

Sue S., essentially the ping thing is the autograph book. You make a comment about a person, which is called a ping, and it posts on their profile page, making the profile page look just like an autograph book. It is all the same thing.

I wish they would fix the 'huge spacing' that has showed up since last night so that we don't need to scroll down paragraphs. I think the 'emotion line' is a bit juvie too, but hey... whatever floats your boat.

Nanci - autograph books are also common in churches, at weddings, and other very non-preteen establishments.
And, isn't this comment thread just an "autograph book" for your article?

Just thought I'd let you know that if you use IE, you can download a plugin that will do spell-check for you here: http://www.download.com/ieSpell/3000-12772_4-10603528.html. Firefox has it built in, of course.

Gather has Myspace envy... I think that about sums it up.
I always hope that the comment thread to things that I post will be more than an autograph book. I'd like to see people talking about the article or insulting each other or doing besides leaving a short generic comment. That's half the fun.

Gotta agree Nanci .Would be nice if the original worked before all the silly upgrades .
It's standard practice in software development to add new features before the older ones work. It's a matter of priority. :)

As a programmer, I concur. It's far more entertaining to come up with a new feature, regardless of how useful it is, than to fix something that's broken. Especially if you don't notice the broken part. ::wink::

I don't think I would mind the comment book. There have been times I have wanted to make a comment to a person, not their article. Mentioning you saw something that reminded you of them, or whatever. Yeah, you can send it in an email, but spam is so prevalent around here, who knows if it will ever get read. The status thing, THAT is annoying. I have those on Myspace and Facebook, I don't want them on Gather. They are a PITA to update every time your mood changes, (Mine changes often) and even a bibliophile like me is sometimes unable to come up with the exact word to describe my mood.

Ah but does the comment you make after reading one article necessarily apply some weeks down the road when you have a completely different thought on a different occasion. Can you re-ping? Do you delete your first ping and send another? Seems very confusing to me.

I have received two pings and will be just as happy to never receive another. After all, I can't turn them off after all of my comments about the cowardice of censoring comments on articles.

God forbid a politician should recognize the error of his ways. If it is a thoughtful process ove a period of many months or years, I expect politicians to change their views as they mature.

If it is a matter of weeks or a couple of months I have to think they are flipfloppers.
