In 1988, pregnancy tests weren't sticks that you peed on. You had to actually be somewhat of a scientist to determine if you were going to be popping out a kid anytime soon. I had to mix a few things, pour some pee in a small vial and then mix everything together. If the concoction turned blue, you were either really happy, or you were scared to death. I was only 16, I was scared to death.
Later that day I walked 3 miles to the local health clinic through February cold and snow. 3 miles gives you time to think. I arrived at the clinic tired and thirsty. Behind a high counter on the back wall of the clinic sat Dolly Parton's twin. I saw her hair before I saw anything else, big and bushy would be an understatement. She smiled at me and then frowned when she saw my expression.
"Are you alright sweet heart?"
I did not say a word, just looked at the floor.
“Do you think you are pregnant?” She said gently.
“Yes Ma’am.” I replied timidly
"You need to pee in this cup."
I go to the bathroom and then return to Dolly.
"Good girl. Now go wait in room 3."
The room is gray in color with a touch of nicotine to set the mood. On an angle from the corner is the "table." I sit down on the rolling stool and, roll as far away from the "table" as I can. A few minutes went by and I was thinking of bolting when the door opened and a physician’s assistant charged into the room.
"Why aren't you undressed??" She barked at me.
"I, I… No one told me to get undressed." I stammered
"Fine, just get on the table and lay down.” An audible sigh escaped her lips.
I did as I was told and in a flash she jerked up my t-shirt and pressed hard on my abdomen. When she was done she walked to her desk and began to write things down.
“We can schedule the abortion for next week, you are 6 to 8 weeks pregnant, the sooner we do it the better."
"So, I am pregnant?"
"That's why you are here isn't it, to get rid of it?" She sneered.
As she watched me, I hopped down and grabbed my coat. I didn't say a word as I pulled open the door.
"Where are you going?" She barked.
I kept walking, slowing down only long enough to smile at Dolly before walking out into the snow.
6 months later the greatest inspiration of my life was born. Because of my daughter Beth I stopped using drugs and alcohol and finished high school. 19 years later she is still inspiring me with her kindness and charity to others. I can not imagine what my life would have been if I had not walked out of that clinic all those years ago.

heather, I am not sorry..it made my decision so easy. ;-)
Unfortunately, a few years later I did go thru with one..I had the chicken pox and was on heart meds...they told me that I had a good chance of complications..to this day I regret that choice..what if they were wrong.
