“Well here it goes,” I thought when I entered Mrs. Wolf’s classroom. Mrs. Wolf was my forensics coach, and we thought it would be good practice to tell my story (The Tale of the Three Trees) to her class. I stood in a corner of the room. The little first graders seated themselves a couple of feet from where I stood. When I began, I viewed all the little eyes upon me and the occasional laugh and me smiling when I used a funny voice. I began to tell my story about how these three trees wanted to be great things. One wanted to be a treasure chest, one wanted be a great sailing ship, and the last want to stay on this one hill. At the end of my story one tree becomes the manger holding the baby Jesus. The second tree becomes the boat that carries Jesus and some of his disciples in a stormy sea. The last tree becomes the cross Jesus carried, was nailed to, and died on. Each of the trees gets its wish, though not in the way they imagined. Telling them my story was unlike the meets where I am shaking with nerves as I waited to begin for the judge. I felt much more calm. Those first graders were very attentive and really seemed to enjoy my story. When I completed my story, the class clapped. Then Mrs. Wolf asked the kids questions like “What was the story about?” and “What part did you like best?” Many of the kids shared their thoughts and answers at first for the question “what part did you like best?” Then they all started answering that they liked everything. My face lit up with smile. I was so flattered. There were more questions about the characters and such too. I remember them saying good-bye. When I left the room, I was on cloud nine. I mentioned to everyone (who would listen) about how nice of judges the first graders were. I had found a new self-esteem from my little friends, and it helped me continue to be successful in the forensics season. At the end of the forensics season, those same first graders got to hear my story again when I performed my story in front of grades K5-4. They seemed to enjoy it just as much the second time around. I couldn’t have been more grateful for their support.
