Dawn was the worst time
When light came through the shutters
Leaking memories with a cutting edge
To slit through sleep and dreams.
He'd lay and stare and gently rock
As if she slept beside him in her silent pose.
He dared not turn and gaze
As in former days
In case she wasn't there
And stabbing pain
Would strike him once again.
He'd move a hand
And tap her space
And hoped to feel
The outline of her face;
But cotton pillows were bare
Like an open tomb
As he stared around his lonely room
And heard her ghostly whisperings
