Oh my! This is so funny. I'm glad I took the time to watch it! As most of you know, I'm a homeschooler and I can honestly say I've dealt with just about all of these scenarios! No, homeschoolers are not freaks! lol We're just regular people trying to do best by our children. If you lived in my school district, you just might homeschool as well! And while I may have WANTED to say these things, I have tried to always replywith kindness.
I still don't know how to put a video in the post, but here's the link.

that is just way too cool! I'm heading now to add it to my homeschooling squidoo lens!
I think it's cool that some parents homeschool their kids!
That was an interesting video with some very good points.
I think the children that are homeschooled are usually smarter. They still have to turn their paperwork into thsoe state or whatever. But they can be taught morals, respect and all the things you dont learn in public school. Maybe some common sense. From what I went through with my youngest and what the kids today go through. All they study is the TAKS test. or preparing for it. Even if several parents got together and actually hired a teacher or tudor. I think it is good thing/
Great video
Homeschooling is best when a parent (or grandparent) can do it. It goes about twice as fast on average with half the stress and turns out a more well rounded product.
Too bad the public schools fight it with propaganda and lack of support. There would be more money for each child in public school if there were more kids homeschooled.
Donald, I never had to turn paperwork into the state, this is something that varies from state to state I believe.
But, I must say this was cool, as a homeschool graduate I must say that the attitude towards homeschoolers today is a lot better than it was when I was being homeschooled. But, I think that it will get better when this generation graduates and so forth and so on. One can only hope!
that's interesting, Kimberli. I have to do 1 of 3 things at the end of each year - a) turn in an evaluation that's been signed off on by a certified teacher, b) do standardized testing and turn in the results or c) have a psychiatric evaluation done (usually for children who are already under psychiatric care or who are special needs). But I know each state is different. A friend of mine in TN has to have her kids under an "umbrella" school and that school has to review the work done.
Missouri is pretty lax, so much so that I pretty much taught myself through high school so that my mom could focus on my younger siblings. Just had to make sure that I wrote down everything I did so that if the state did come in to inspect their would be some kind of record. But, the state has bigger fish to fry than to chase after homeschoolers around here.
This would be funny if it weren't so common. I've met a lot of homeschoolers and their moms and have been very impressed. Homeschoolers usually do better than public school students on standardized testing. It stands to reason: Parents who homeschool do so because they want the best possible education for their children.
If I had not been able to afford parochial school for my daughter, I would have homeschooled her and joined a network. Her parochial school had an excellent curriculum and homeschoolers who came in at all levels acclimated well. They were often ahead of the other students and had a wider variety of learning experiences and subjects. PIF

There is a quiet trend happing here in the Phoenix metro area. Many parents are homeschooling their children through high school with the assistance of online public schools. When it comes time to graduate from high school, many of these kids are so far ahead of their age group that they are enrolling in our large community college system and totally skipping the last two years of high school. We are seeing 14/15/16 year olds graduating from our community college with an associates degree and starting at the state university without ever having gotten a high school diploma. These children easily pass college entrance exams. I think that says something about the value of homeschooling.
It's very true. Most homeschoolers I know that are in high school are doing dual-enrollment with the local community college. I believe it's free here until they "graduate" high school. So oftentimes they do have 2 years of college under their belt before even officially entering college.
as a family with a resident teacher there is no way i would even consider homeschooling........ but to each his/or her own..... pif
hmm... and I know teachers who have quit their jobs in order to homeschool because they didn't like what they were seeing. Obviously each familiy situation is different based on the relationships within the family and the schools available in the area.
yes, many factors and beliefs would come into play making a homeschool decision......with both of us in the field of education we just see it all differently......
What a lot of people don't look at,we teach the children more than the teachers now days. They send home so much work the kids can not be kids.No I don't have kids in schools just grandkids.
Have a great gather day!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for posting to sparealine.gather.com
Statistics show that out of a 40 minute class time, only 16 minutes is spent "teaching." The rest of the time is spent getting books out, sharpening pencils, telling kids to settle down, answering unrelated questions, etc. No wonder they come home with so much homework.
16 minutes?LOL I thought it was more like 10.With me helping the grandchildren I feel I'm doing all the work and no pay.Next time I remember my camera I'll take pictures of the kitchen cabinets where the words they have to know before they leave kindergarten to go to first grade.
thanks for sharing it

I was a student who definitely would have done better homeschooled I think. At the time I went through school, we did not have a lot of the drug problems they have today, but still, things went so fast and most of the time it was if you got it fine, if you did not get it, then "too bad for you." I was the latter often. I always felt like I missed out on something.

With the way things are going, it may become more common from necessity.
