Linda, the phrase "but then, that's ..." always leads to a messy end. Of course this is unethical as well as, in most cases, illegal. I'm stealing this thought from Wayne Dyer, who stole it from Mother Theresa. Asked to join a protest against the Vietnam War, Mother Theresa reportedly replied "No. But organize a protest FOR peace and I'll join you." When do we focus on the people for something rather than those against anything?

If someone can't hadle the competiton and has to destroy someone else's signs, then they should chose another line of work.

Smashing campaign signs is along the same lines as all of the campaign ads that have cropped up on YouTube for the 2008 election. People out there believe that these ads are real! Perhaps those are the same thick individuals that smash campaign signs for other causes (?)
