I love my Australian Cattle Dog Mix sometimes called a Red Heeler, Autumn. She turned 7 this year. I have never regretted getting her. He was born on a near-by ranch in a litter of twelve. Her mother was a Border Collie and her father a Red Heeler. She does seem to most resemble the heeler side.
Heelers are smart and very protective being they are a working breed. Protective should never be confused with mean there is a big difference. She is merely very watchful of me and heelers also have a habit of needing everything to be in there place. When my blue was alive she made sure everyone was in their rightful place for the night. In fact Pepper would force the other pets into their beds. The cat well he didn't sleep in my room when Pepper was alive.
If your thinking about this breed as a pet as with any intelligent breed you need to make sure you have the time to train it. If you need to keep a pet in a crate consider another breed.
Just look at this beautiful dog. The ball in the grass in front of her is like a pacifier almost always in her mouth.

She sees me. Thinking oh I'll bet she wants to play fetch.

Here ya go , pick it up. You know what to do. This girl is obsessed !

Well, pick it up. Please !

Okay , here ya go.

She has been known to place her foot on the bottom of my lounge chair so I have to set up. She also likes to place the ball right on me if I am distracted.
If the ball isn't in her mouth it is near-by. In this shot it is right underneath her. She must be careful . Tawanda loves nothing more than stealing her ball and hiding with it under my bed where Autumn doesn't fit. The Jack Russell terrier is also very smart and mine both love to tease.

Thanks Nana
I really miss having one
We had a blue, named Pepper as well - she was very smart & truly needed to have a job for her extra energy!
