I'm astounded and dismayed that I heard about this story just a few days ago, and when I did some research on the story, it's validity and source, I was horrified to learn that the first recall of this product was back in December of 2005. Why is this crap still on the pet food shelves?????
Fortunate for me, I never heard of this brand of pet food because if my dear furbaby ever got sick from something like this I would be saddened beyond tears.
Yes, I have copied the article that gives the best story and I am printing it HERE for you pet lovers to read. I am noting the author and the publication so I don't think its copyright infringement, but I think this story is important enough to get out there en masse.
NOTE: After comments from my fellow Gathers I have taken away the article because I don't want to get involved in some copywrite nightmare..
I don't know how to add the link, but if you are interested just go to Google and search for
Pet Food causing death march 2007 and the article from the NEw York times will come up for you I'm sure.

Now to the important part. This breaks my heart. How could stores keep selling?
The death toll is over two dozen known cases. I will send out the basic info in a form that won't be trouble. I admire your courage - but you might consider removing it and writing about it instead.
What a good and loving person you are and I love your furbaby from having seen the pic so many times.
I bet the 23 dogs that have died is only the tip of the iceberg... how sad!
The recent dog food recalls were due to wheat and rice glutten contaminated by melamine (a rat poison). Both of these gluttens were supposedly purchased overseas.
Makes me feel very helpless as I shop for my own food that I could be poisoned from someone else's mishandling of my food...but the authorities are slower to react when it comes to pets dying from bad food sources.
I feed my cats Wellness brand (grain-free) and I thank God we weren't affected by that horrible problem.
