Thank You. :o)
Why does an electron do what an electron does ???
I'm not here with any answers or judgement, but I find animals are mostly replacements for a human being. People use pets for many reasons, but the biggest reason, by far, would be for companionship.
I've seen houses where the animals ruled, doing as they pleased, wherever and whenever they pleased, all the while with a human being following behind like a little puppy, doing as the pet commands, let me in or out, feed me, where is my _ _ _ _ (fill in the blank,) feed me, walk me, give me a treat, let me in or out..... blah blah blah.....
I say if you like animals, by all means, have an animal, but take care of it would ya ??? Some of the worst animal abusers are the same people claiming to be animal lovers, go figure......
And if the animal is mean, keep it locked up, please....
And I have often used Gandhi's quote myself.
...mankind is an omnivore species. Burger for lunch?

I no longer eat veal which was always a favorite until I learned the background of producing some fine veal. I do, however, still eta my share of chickens even after spending my youth working on a hellacious chicken and egg farm where 3 to 4 chickens are housed together in a little 2x3 cage in a row of 500 cages in a non-sunlit barn with 5000 cages, For Their Entire Life.
Thinking about it, I guess I'll have PB&J for lunch today. (seeing it's what I actually brought)

The older I get and the more animals I am around, have taught me that they are much more intelligent and capable of some form of rational thought, than our current scientists give them credit for.
I still have pain in my heart, from the loss of each and every "family member" I've ever been blessed with. I still shed a tear for some, who I was very close to.
I and the wife currently have 4 four-legged family members. They are treated as if they were our children and we grieve every loss.

I have learned not to harm animals, even dogs. I do confess, I don't care for dogs, they scare me, but I don't harm them, either. It's not wrong to favor and adore cats, but it is wrong to harm any animal, including dogs.
I still grieve for my two best cats, Katline Rose (most of my childhood) and Malcolm (7 years I had that old tomcat.) Now I have Maggie, and while I can imagine my life without her, I really don't want to. She's the apple of my eye, figuratively.
Most of my pets came from rescue shelter.
Apricot, my present fur child included. Some creep dumped her out on Martin Way, the busiest street in Lacy.
I love Josh, ,my dog and best companion.
Love this quote especially:"Most people have forgotten how to live with living creatures, with living systems and that, in turn, is the reason why man, whenever he comes into contact with nature, threatens to kill the natural system in which and from which he lives. " ~ Konrad Lorenz, Naturalist

I've been in many places in the world and overall, the Western nations because they can, treat animals better. Poorer places do not have the option overall.
My mom's horse was just a big dog, babied and sometimes ridden. My dad grew to accept that. Things change as needs and abilities do. I think it will continue to do so in developing countries too. Just look how Asia is changing towards treatment of dogs just in our lifetimes.
A good question though.
Our domestic animals can detect a person that is basically a bad person. If your dog (or cat) dislikes someone you can bet there is a reason.
Our household pets tend to "adopt" the types of attitudes their owners have.
A well trained house pet will behave properly and will not treat your house like the outdoors unless they are sick. As with children, they can get diarrhea, they do throw up on occasion. This is not cause to punish them.
Never expect an animal to behave as an adult person, no matter how old he/she gets.
Our house pets do think, reason and sympathise. They understand much more than most people give them credit for. They can figure out "logic".
Our Golden Retriever, Kristy, is a member of our family and is cared for as such. We are senior citizens, and this pet brings so much joy into our lives. She is welcome where ever we go. She is better behaved than a lot of children we know.
