We have an area off to the side of our house that apparently was intended to be a flower garden by the people we bought the house from. I've never been the green thumb type so it's pretty much just sat there the entire time we've lived here. I've planted a few things in it every now and then but haven't done any serious work on it. The past year I've really gotten into improving our property and doing outdoorsy work, so I decided on getting that flower garden in shape. The kids and I went to town today and picked up some plants, some gardening tools, and some garden gloves and set to work.
Here's what the flower garden looks like.

Here are the plants we picked out. Haley and Parker picked some out too. I thought they would get excited about picking out their own plants and then getting to plant them.

After getting everything out and in place we got to work digging our first hole.

It took quite a while. I ended up digging it after they concluded it was "taking forever". (See the look of annoyance and frustration on Parker's face. LOL)

Here's Haley covering the roots of her first plant up.

Her little garden gloves were Scooby Doo ones. I thought Parker was going to get into a fistfight with Haley over the Scooby Doo gloves in the store, but I got him interested in a blue pair with green caterpillars on them.

Haley posing with her first plant. This was one she chose herself, the first one she picked out. It was also the first one she wanted to plant.

By this time Parker had decided gardening was not for him and had gone off to play in the sandbox instead. I was just sure digging hole would appeal to him! Guess not!

Haley was starting to get a bit bored too I think. She started walking along and balancing on the root of a tree we have planted there.

She did plant one more flower though. An orange one that she picked out herself.

That was enough gardening for her though, and she was off to jump on the trampoline, followed very quickly by Parker.

I ended up planting the rest of them by myself. Afterwards I took photos of them. I meant to look on the flower pots to see exactly what they all were, but I forgot, so the only one I know is the first one, which is a hydrangea.

Macro of the hydrangea.

The sun was a bit bright for this one. It looks as if it's glowing. The sky was alternately bright and dreary, so photographing was rather difficult.

Macro of the same flower, which showed up better.

This one turned out rather dark I thought. Parker picked it out.

Macro of the same flower.

I should know what these next ones are, because my mom always had some of them growing when I was a kid, but I can't for the life of me remember what they are. Maybe impatiens?

Macro of whatever they are.

I picked these ones out. I thought they were beautiful. Simple but pretty.

Macro shot.

Haley picked these orange ones out. They're so bright! She said they were stinky though.

Macro.

And the very last flower.

Macro.

I couldn't resist a macro of its leaves too. They were so unique.

Now here is what our efforts have produced. (See Haley in the background? She was all for helping again once the water hose came out!)

Not exactly a great change, but I plan on continuing the work on it. Can't wait to see what we can make it into! I just hope the kids get more into it.

Tell Parker and Haley I can use their help about Thursday, - plan to get back out in the yard at that time for some more yardwork!!! If I had a choice... I would probably have done what Parker did, - leave the work for someone else to do!!!
You will need a whole wheel barrow full of flowers to cover up
most of that ground. Good luck gettin things to grow out there.
check out my series Bluebonnets Of Texas?? Even if it is
only chapter 20 for now will be good. Then come back to
check the other ones at your pace. Thanks sweetie.

I need to get some flowers, but am waiting till I get enough Gather points for a Home Depot GC. After losing everything last year with the draught, I would feel better if my flowers were free this year.
I'm envious at the spacious area you have to garden, Victoria!

Please tell Parker and Haley I said Hello :o)
Great photo essay, thanks.
I notice you have trees surrounding your little garden... The grass looks sparse there, if you didn't till the ground in preparation for your garden, that means even grass has a hard time becoming established in that area. It's probably too shady? You might want to plant more shade-loving plants next time.
The hydrangea might love it there but the other sun-loving plants you bought might struggle to survive.
I also recommend saving the tags that come with your plants from the nursery and sticking them into the ground where your plants go. If no tags came with them, ask the plant name from a knowledgeable person, write the name with a permanent marker on a plastic fork and stick the fork into the ground next to your plant. Your plant is now identifiable so that if you want to save the seeds for next year, you know which plants you're replanting.
I'd love to see more pictures as the season progresses so we can see what your garden looks like in full bloom later!
1. Pink Hydrangea
2. African Daisy?
3. Yellow Snapdragons
4. Red and white Dwarf Carnations
5. Purple African Daisy?
6. Dwarf "Stinky" Marigolds
7. Red Geraniums.
Our nurseries do not have plants out yet. It still too cold here in Illinois. We could still have a lte freeze.
sigh.
And I see your lovely kids in flip-flops and short sleeves.
Double sigh.
I hope in time you discover the joys of gardening. There's nothing like it. It's the most cathartic activity I know.
I'm in the middle of spring gardening and could sure use some help - ...and ...
Hailey might like the pic of the cute watering can I just posted today on my profile page.
I haven't learned how to do a photo essay yet or even just how to place a pic in a post or I'd paste it here. Sorry about that.
Anyway I'm looking forward to the progression of the garden and I loved the bird bath you built - do you have another pic to show how you did that?
I am hoping to plant a flower bed out around the
back side of my apartment there's this huge corner
space but I will have to get permission to do so.
I found the watering can at Target last year - they have the cutest stuff
Here's a pic with the froggy and bee windchimes - the propellers turn like crazy in the wind we had today.
would love to see your garden now!
