"Lay still! Don't move! the voice echoing up through the gully sent chills down my spine....
It was a typical hot summer day and myself and my two young children had been outside talking to the neighbour next door. He had brought his horse into our yard and Sean (4 yrs old at the time) and Ellie (2 and a half) had been thrilled at the idea of having a ride. We lived on acreage in the sunshine coast hinterland and shared the easement with two other properties. Our house was situated on a hill and the yard sloped down towards the gully. The gully had a creek and the second neighbours house was on a hill on the other side of it. The neighbour with the horse promised the kids a ride as soon as he got back from visiting our other neighbour and I turned to go inside the house.
My kids were used to playing in the yard by themselves as there was no threat from any traffic. It seemed like only seconds when suddenly I heard my two childrens' screams. I ran out of the house and searched the yard but couldn't see them. How quickly little children can move. As I raced down towards the sound of their screaming, I heard my other neighbour yelling "Lay still! Don't move! My first reaction was SNAKE! With my heart pounding I ran down the slope towards the sound of voices with dread. The closer I got, the louder my childrens' scream echoed back at me. Then my two neighbours were carrying my children towards me. Sean had only been wearing a pair of shorts but Ellie had been fully covered in a play suit. They had followed the horse down into the gully and both of them had run straight into a wasps nest.
Sean was red all over and in terrible pain. Back at the house, I counted 84 bites before giving up counting the rest. Ellie had bites around her neck but had been saved being savagely bitten by her play suit. They never rode the horse that day.

Wonderfully written!
Sheila: the paper wasps we have here are quite nasty little sods.
Magi - how nice to see you, i'm afraid it is not fiction. My two kids still remember the day vividly.
