It seems that people’s sense of right and wrong has changed since the republicans took control in the 80’s. Or maybe that’s how they got control?
It used to be, we were encouraged to believe, what was good for us as a whole, took precedent over what was good for us personally if there was a conflict. When it came time to vote, you had a higher duty than your own self interest and voted accordingly.
Of course there was always the greedy and self-centered who would never take a stand for something unless they stood to gain from it. But our society would point those people out and look down on them. They weren’t even considered “Good Americans”.
Principles, ideas and morals meant a lot in our society, as a whole. Not just, morals against sex and other things. But morals and principles of decency and the value of each and every person. The idea that everyone had redeeming qualities was not considered bad. Churches preached the doctrine of fairness and the good of the whole, as opposed the few. The welfare of the poor and disadvantaged was a moral protected by a lot of church’s doctrine. Even though people may have acted to the contrary, it was frowned upon. Outside of religion you could still count on the principles of decency.
Yes, in most places, blacks and other minorities were often left out of the equation. But the black community took the very morals and religions we held dear and demonstrated how it meant them too, back in the 60’s. Thanks to preachers like Dr, Martin King, who pointed out the word of God and how it applied to all, we were ushered into the civil rights era. This spoke to the conscience of America’s white population. Even though some had lived their whole life thinking blacks were inferior, many found they could not argue with their own religious up bringing. These whites became what is now known as Liberal Christians, the others split off and began to create what is now the “religious right”
Since the days of Ronald Reagan, it has become socially correct in the republican party to be against equal rights as long as you could cloak it in a less confrontational package, like “Affirmative Action is bad for Minorities” . But even deeper than that, the American culture became more and more self-centered, to the point “Greed Is Good” became as popular phrase.
The human creature, like any animal has survival instincts, which constantly strain our attempts to be civilized. But one thing that is supposed to make us different from animals, is we have the ability to put our selfish desires aside in order to save others and develop a civil society. This is the lost part of our culture. One we have turned out backs on as a Nation.
When you make a decision about how we are to govern our selves, when you go to vote or take a stand on the issues, what is the driving force that moves you?
What is best for you, and yours? What is best for us as a country? Or what is best for those less fortunate than you? Or is it just what you want to happen to people you dislike? These type things are what really determines our worth as a society.

I take voting very seriously. My parents instilled that in me as a responsibility of citizenship. My vote is cast based on what I hope will be best for the community (or country) as a whole.
Big people = People who HAVE. People who CAN.
Little People = People who DON'T have. People who can NOT.
That is the sum-total of the Old Man's credo, my Mother's credo, my credo, and the credo I taught my children. That credo nforms and illuminates my every political decision, vote and argument.
I AM, today. "big people." I may not be tomorrow.
That sounds suspiciously like "from each according to his means, to each according to his needs". . . . .? Is that what you mean and do you know who said that?
Yes, I know who said it.
I recognize what Dex sees.
In god we trust wasnt part of our lives since 1776
Religion should never have been in schools
It belongs in church
Exactly to that time.
The political ugliness came about when the democrats found they could no longer just 'have their way' and had to begin to justify their positions (which they couldn't do then and can't do now).
Kennedy said its ok to be wealthy but wrong to flaunt it in peoples face, Bush said its alright to be wealthy and throw it in everyone's face. Bush made a speech in congress and said it was a mistake when the public was told everyone deserves a piece of the pie, some are made to have the pie and the rest are made to clean the plate.
Their was a time when their were a few good republican leaders, Eisenhower said: "Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed." My opinion is their was never a better republican or president than Eisenhower in war and peace.
The American public needs to be reeducated to stop thinking that all that matters is the dollar and the most retched person in the world is worth more than the largest amount of money you can have.
Remember our constitution? It says all men are created equal, ALL men not just all Americans.
We do not have a conservative party today because their is no such thing as a conservative politician in the GOP its just another scam and all they do is create more big government and deficits. Every big government deficit created by the GOP in the past has been paid off by the democrats when they regain power.
The repuds you mention like Ole, woudl be democrates today,, after teh racist left the dem party adn joined the repuds.
"Remember our constitution? It says all men are created equal, ALL men not just all Americans. "
Not quite, It was the AMERICAN Declaration of Independence about which you speak. While the statement is true, it was agreed to by the Founders/citizens of this country only.
Religious people have their own individual intepretations of biblical writing.
and of the U. S. Constitution.
The "created equal" is part of the Declaration of Independence.
And didn't say Americans are craeated equal
"that all men are created equal " date 7/4/76
The slave/person question was not even part of that discussion.
10-11 years later during the writing of the Constitution our founding fathers, flopped on slavery.
Constitution ratified 1787
"The "created equal" is part of the Declaration of Independence." which is part of the constitution.
WUT?!? No it's not!
He did his years in the Marine Corp and was honorably discharged.
But he is a conservative democrat.
Texas Air Guard or some darn thing, I could be wrong. It is not worth looking up. History seems to suggest that Geo. W. was drunk and high during his entire time served and mostly missing from duty.
He was probably still using drugs then because he failed to turn up for his drug testing.
The internet is a wonderful thing but very much abused like everything else in America.
You may have one or two people using Gather, a sister, brother, or friend from school but 99% of the people we call friend we have never seen or know anything about, we just have a common goal or interest in some subject.
I think it would be the best thing if people actually started socialising again face to face and discussed their ideas and plans, their wants and hopes instead of this 24/7 harassment of people on the internet every time two ideas clash.
Anti-war people wern't very polite.
But things began to get ugly with Nixon campaign. He staged demostrations for his appearances.
etc.
Regan's campaigns were even more openly racist.
Then for his second campaign Regan brought in the loving Christian Anti-American crowd.
Politics have stunk like an old time chamber pot, left unemptied for a week, every since.
The conservatives, led by Glen Beck are claiming 1 to 2 million marchers in Washington.
fake photos included.
It will get totally out of hand, count on it.
"Helping those few who cannot afford health care does not have to come at the expense of everyone else. So who is really being selfish? "
Have you picked out who should help the ones with no healthcare?
Have to read the story of the Good Samaritan? We Christians seem to want to pick and choose what elements of Christianity we want to adopt. To me, it is very clear what Jesus' stance would be on healthcare reform through the story of the Good Samaritan.
The Republicans want everyone to be successful enough to buy their own wonderful insurance. And Democrats want to keep everyone so poor that they have to have government help. Why can't you all see that?
I can't see that because that's not what I see happening. We have a system of health care costs increasing so dramatically that it cancels out people's raises, if they're lucky enough to get one. Republicans' answer to everything is usually tax cuts or tax deductions, which might work for people who make enough money to benefit from them. It would seem that the Republicans want people who are successful to remain successful, and if you're not successful, well too bad.
Bottom line, the system is a mess. It needs to be fixed. Had previous attempts been successful, my mom might have survived. If the Republicans would see that instead of just screaming NO, I might vote for one again.
Spartan, you lie. I have never said that we didn't want reform. We do - but reform is not defined by having the government take over your every health need. We need cost reductions. We need more choices, not less. We need people to be in total control of their own medical issues, not asking the government or an insurance company to "pretty please let me have this procedure."
The Republicans have plans, there are numerous private/plans that have been given to our politicians. But Dems are bound and determined that the only answer to everything is big daddy government taking over.
Marilyn, YOU are a LIAR! And, I'm going to call you on it every time I see it!
(But I am, just so no one thinks I've gone nice...)
There are people in all health care systems who love and who hate them. But what is important to recognize is that the nationalized health care in the other countries is now considered unsustainable. That's also true in the states that have tried similar programs here.
There are far better ideas than nationalized health care. If only anyone would listen.
I posted the link to an article by a guy (Democrat) whose father died in the hospital here in the US. He researched our health care system and insurance and came up with a plan that is quite similar to what I've suggested and to what some of our Republican politicians have suggested.
You should all read what this man has to say. We need reform, not government control.
Play by the Rules
Bush was extreme, I don't think Obama is extreme, but the next 3 years up to 7 years may tell a different story.
He was voted for in a large majority for the Presidential election.
But then we have the right to peaceful demonstration. But it's fear mongering going on now.
Marilyn M, this simply is not true. It scare tactics plain and simple. Care to support it?
What makes better sense is allowing free market care to really be free market care. Yes, sever the ties of insurance from your job so you can take it everywhere. Make insurance affordable - and that can be done. Make trips to the doc affordable - and that can be done. And let Americans take care of themselves. We don't need the government to pick our noses for us. We can help ourselves, if the government lets us do that. And then...for the few who really cannot afford care, we have the existing Medicaid program that should cover them. (And, yes, the government needs to redefine what they determine as poverty level.)
Naturally, I'm going to ask you to cite your source for that lie, as I can cite the source for my words.
Naturally, you won't... or you'll get someone with an actual brain to do it for you. Again.
See? Toldja I'd have to call you a liar again.
"The proposed plans today will decrease the care of anyone with insurance or Medicaid/Medicare."
Lie. You know the drill: I ask, you hide or bluster, yadayadayada.
You'd think you'd stop commenting outside your 'friends only' posts.
Unless its a Beck/Limbaugh lovefest, you're always going to be noticed as and shown for a liar until you start speaking from a position of KNOWLEDGE instead of frightened-old-lady-crackpot-nonsense.
There is no point in blaming the Republicans or the Democrats for something that they do not control. They are only human beings and yield to temptation just like the rest of us. The lure of money leads then into temptation and harmful actions.
