This weekend, there was a lot to cause me to reflect on our (society’s) view of government and politicians.
I grew up in a different world, were government was very, very important in people’s lives. Yes we were very naive before Vietnam and Nixon and that period caused us to be aware of how it was broken. We had been slowly abandoning our government at that time since the end of WWII. Relief of the stress of war, coupled with new found prosperity, had started a process that allowed us to slowly be lulled in to a gentle sleep.
Vietnam awakened us to the problems we had let grow (somewhat) by shocking us to the reality not all wars were just. We blamed the President, we blamed the communist, and we blamed the politicians for being stupid and too gung-ho. But slowly we were paying for being too wrapped up in ourselves.
We could find fault in the president, the pentagon and the congress. So we went full bore trying to fix the war and hire new blood. Unfortunately, we weren’t looking past the end of our nose. It turns out, those problems were just symptoms of a far greater disease growing deep at the roots of our governmental system and infecting the fabric of our society.
Without knowing any better, even though there were voices trying to warn us, we hired Richard Nixon and others to get it all straight. Simple enough, old blood disguised as new, and promising to end the war. But we were sold a bill of goods. You see, we were told democrats had gotten us in this mess and a good common sense republican would get us out. It made sense on the surface, and like most sophisticated intentional miss-information, it sounded almost like the right thing to do.
Lo and behold, we were duped, big time! It turns out the whole administration was amuck with con men and crooks who looked at the government as a private tool to use for their own benefit. But this awareness came slow and in pieces, while people were slowly being disillusioned in the war after loosing hope at the loss of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King. The spirit to fix what was broken waned and many well meaning people had lost their will to make real change. In all this mess the war finally was allowed to collapse.. not ended mind you, just allowed to collapse on top of our already disillusioned soul.
Still unaware of the true cause of all our misery , we mostly stumbled along while turning our governmental responsibilities to those whoever wanted to pay attention to them.
Other changes in our society just deepened the underlying decease, while our myopic focus on our individual selves grew worse. Well meaning idealist grew weary, gave up and sold out their ideas in exchange of convenience, money and material things. The underlying disease grew rampant and totally ignored.
During this period of selfishness and greed, old ill meaning hatreds started to be reshaped into intentional miss-information. Many of the things which would not be tolerated or considered legitimate ideas decades ago, now are repackaged in empty platitudes and worse.
People came along and made those evils and a method to market them a science.
Insidiously hateful concepts were white washed and legitimized by the new marketing of people like Karl Rove. They learned from business marketing that crap could be packaged as wholesome and Christian. They connected to old factions in Christianity that had already repackaged hate, intolerance, bigotry and selfishness as gospel. Then this was all connected to big business interest and an unholy trinity was formed to become the “new conservative movement” The Christian philosophy that used here had always been at odds with Biblical teachings and had spent years being on the outside of things.. Now it was helped by political scientist, corporate marketers, and white collar criminals.
Thus we now have been trained to hate government and politicians, this keeps more and more people away from believing in their government and letting it all go into the hands of others with hidden agendas.
This is how we ended up with the worst governmental system in our history and the worst administration (GWB). This is how we ended up in a recession and maybe worse in the future. This is how we ended up with a greatly divided nation.
Was it the Republicans, Democrats that got us here? Was it right wing fundamentalist that got us here? Bleeding Heart Liberals? Well you have been trained to believe in all of that.. and way to many of us do. But the truth is WE all are to blame. The disease that underlies most of our governmental problems, lie not in our government, but in us, the American people!
This unlocked the backdoor of our most precious possession. It has caused us to let go of the most sacred duty of an American Citizen, the right and responsibility to self govern.
Yeah I know, “my vote don’t count” “they have control” etc etc etc.
But those are more lies we have been brainwashed with by people with ulterior motives.
We need to get back to our values. (heard that before?) Usually when you heard that, it’s from a preacher or politician or a CEO… but , they always add which principles they want to imprint you with. The only principles that are really important are the ones that come to your heart at a funeral of a loved one, or the birth of another.. or the ones that run thru your heart when you look at your child. Those deep ones that you feel in your bones and know in your deepest heart that are right. Not the intellectual ones, floating around in your head at the sign of indignation, anger or frustration….. but the good, decent values that lie in your heart.
We have allowed others to change our images of congress, and the people who are there..
Both the voting and non-voting among us put them there. We have let the people who are the least interesting in their responsibilities as American citizens, become a large voting block that swings elections. We must look beyond the programming we receive from TV and Radio and others, and look within ourselves for what we need to once again take back our “job” of being a government of the people and by the people. It isn’t “take back our government” because we have always owned it and had the right to control it/
Yes big business, special interest, and small faction have taken control.. only because we let them.
What has this on my mind today, is after thinking about Senator Kennedy and others from my long past. Even though, I was an adult when the Kennedy’s came on the scene, I cant remember a time in politics when they weren’t there. I didn’t pay much attention till 1962. Now, before all you conservatives go ballistic at the mention of their name, please stop and think a minute. Ted disappointed us, early one. We hoped he would take up the mantel of civil rights, healthcare, and other issues that were designed to help the average and less fortunate Americans. But Teddy just couldn’t seem to live up to his brothers ideas. Eventually he was written off as a joke, or by some as an enemy. But the whole time he was taking is job in the Senate seriously. With a drive to help those who were not rich or advantaged. Whether his colleagues agreed with his ideas or not.. they have all now confessed they admired his working with certain principles and sticking with them. The also admired his desire to make things work by compromising.
We have no one like today like that, because we were duped into using the wrong values to select people. Right or Wrong, agree or not, the people of Massachusetts sent him back many times. He was responsible for over 400 laws passed in this country.. all of which was motivated to help others. Where can you find a skill level and determination like that, Liberal or conservative? Well you cant if you use the wrong values to select a representative. If you expect them to be perfect.. you wont get a reasoned and passionate legislator who has first hand experience with adversity, failure and triumph like we have, who can get the job done, because that is not how you selecred them. The way we do it now gets us people who are in the “business of government” and don’t understand it’s not a business but a responsibility to the people of the districts and nation as a whole. Even a representative without first hand experience with what most of the country deals with everyday, but can understand and put themselves in your shoes, would be better than what we have now. This government was not designed to send people to congress to do battle, but to get the job done. No one philosophy or idea will ever run this country. Its too big and too diverse. But compromises that work the larger good are what this country operates on.
“WE” , all of us are the solution. Our inner selves are required to participate if we are ever to maintain a free country for everyone.. In the long run, money, lifestyle and financial prosperity will mean nothing if our country continues down this path.

The Spanish-American War was a manufactured war of choice. The Mexican War had been a manufactured war of choice. I could go on, but it just gets tedious.
I find it sad that people are more concerned about who their elected officials sleep with then their abilities to perform their duties.
"This unlocked the backdoor of our most precious possession. It has caused us to let go of the most sacred duty of an American Citizen, the right and responsibility to self govern."
We cannot continue to take democracy as a right, without also taking on the responsibility to preserve it.
"Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country" - JFK.
From Wikipedia:
The philosophy of classical liberalism includes the importance of human rationality, individual property rights, natural rights, the protection of civil liberties, individual freedom from restraint, equality under the law, constitutional limitation of government, free markets, and a gold standard to facilitate global free trade and place fiscal constraints on government,[6]. Classical liberal thinkers include Adam Smith[7] [8][9] and John Locke[10][11].
Social liberalism, a reformulation of 19th century liberalism, rests on the view that unrestrained capitalism is a hindrance to true freedom. Instead of the negative freedom of classical liberalism, social liberals offered positive freedom that would allow individuals to prosper with public assistance in health, education and welfare.[1] This later included government intervention in the economy to provide full employment and protection of human rights. These policies were widely adopted and implemented in European and Western democracies, particularly following the Second World War.[2]
Reagan led the nation to defeat the Soviet Union without firing a shot. That favored quite a few little guys.
Iy has top start with each person reflecting on their responsibility to be the system regardless if they think they can have an impact. We need a new public discourse in this country, free from political maneuvering. It needs to become shameful if a person doesn’t care or has a defeatist attitude about it. It takes setting aside our political differences long enough to concentrate on the very system we are responsible for. It would really help if we started teaching civics to everyone too. It takes caring , thoughtful average citizens wanting to participate in governing.... Its deep than just political issues,, they have to be somewhat secondary.. What are your ideas Lewis?
I noticed you didn't mention Liberty, Freedom, the Constitution, or Limited government. Those things not very important, huh? Why have people the world over risked life and limb to come here, to come to America? Was it welfare payments, guaranteed government and union jobs , or even health care? I submit to you that , no, it was none of these things. It was to get a part of the American dream, to make, with effort and sweat, a better life for their children. Read "Liberty and Tyranny" if you get a chance.
I think most immigrants come here to escapee as well as find. we are all immigrants. Why they came here is irrelevant to our civic responsibility as Americans. But you do kind of point out what I am saying... your comment goes back to your political agenda... you have to consider it is only one of many. For those things you mention like Liberty to be a reality, you first have to accept that in reality we all have to find common ground or fail. We all have to compromise to have liberty and how much government we have is related to how we conduct ourselves toward others more than it has to do with what we want.
Town Hall Democracy or Mob Hysteria? Rethinking the Importance of the Public Sphere
I am of the belief that government can do a lot of good in our lives. But we have to take it back and make it so. I know when I was 18, no one encouraged me to register to vote and I didn't. I had the idea it wouldn't matter.
I didn't vote until I was in my twenties and it wasn't until I hit my thirties that I started taking any real interest in who was getting voted in.
But the good things I remember from my childhood - civil rights being passed and even the "Keep America Beautiful" campaign (remember I was in elementary school) were big amazing movements because it seemed everyone was behind them and they were positive.
I want to see civil rights and human rights move forward again. The status quo isn't working and you are correct - WE need to change it. Thanks for the wake up call and pep talk, Dexter. (And the history lesson too.)
I have been watching the division grow, between our people, for far too long and have been wondering what it's going to take to get us back as one nation. There are so many strong feelings being aired on both sides.
One other thing. I think compromise needs to eventually stop somewhere along the process. If it doesn't, one side eventualy loses, if they are the ones always doing the compromising. Take the timber industry for example. They compromised themselves right out of business.
Anyway.. if I remember, I'll check back to see where this goes. Thanks for an article with some thought rather than an article packed with nothing but insults, as so many are. We need to get civility back into the equation, or we'll all get nowhere fast.
G'nite.
That's one thing about a democracy, that makes it such a delicate balance.
The Tenth Amendment states:
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people".
Neither our Congress, our Presidents, or our Supreme Court honors this Amendment. They are all law breakers as far as I'm concerned.
Going back farther I was so happy to hear Tricky Dick say he would not send one more young man to Viet Nam off of American soil. Of course not - he just moved all the soldiers off the bases around the world and sent them to Viet Nam and filled their vacancies with guys off American soil. ( A good friend of mine was one who was shipped out of Germany and sent to Viet Nam.
Thanks for posting this to Obama YES! Palin ~ NO!
I think the Viet Nam war caused a lot of disillusionment across the political spectrum and we've never recovered from it.
We still have political problems from it
Don't kid yourself or anyone else, our Congress (both parties) and several in the Administration still qualify for the above.
Did you ever have an "elect homecoming Queen and King" with penny jars?
That's now how our politicans get elected. They earn about $175,000/annually. Do you have any idea how many have become multi millionaires? Just how did they do that?
Excellent article, however we can't change the past, but I do advise keeping your eyes and minds open to "who's in charge" now.
Deals with pharm co, Deals with insurance companies, Bail out big financial, more pork money to states with military, big money going to "green companies, benefitting Gore and G.E. as well as others.... No TORT reform, (majority are lawyers, will never happen)
Dismally, we will never be free of greed...from either side.
I'm for throwing out every last one of them..
But you are right there are good and bad on each side.
Now, this isn't to say, that every person elected, would be honest as the day is long. But, I have to believe that honesty and simple honor of thy self, would prevail, were it not for a house and senate filled with professionals, who, in most cases, are there for self serving reasons. ( At lease, it certainly appears so. ) They ocaissionally pass a bill that benefits us, as it should be. But more often than not, we see things like social security dug into "because there was too much money", and allowed to be continually spent on bills having nothing to do with SS.
Well said Dexter.
THIS post, in and of itself, is a great start, for "we" or "us" to continue and see if we can reach a concensus here, for whatever reason.
We keep saying throw the bums out, but continue to vote to throw the "other parties" bums out and keeping our(?) own, without regard as to who they are. I think it a disease....
I so agree. And it is up to us to thoroughly investigate each and every participant to various sources of money. I have been appalled at the sums of money both parties have accepted from special interest lobbist! "
"Pay for play and play for pay" must be defeated. Holding our elected "princes" accountable for voting with the "lobbyist" agenda instead of what is best of the citizens should be one of the first priorities on changing the "system".
Each and every citizen should open his/her eyes to just how someone rose to a position of power!
Yes Dexter, it is on "our" shoulders to learn the truth and let "them" know that we know and "aren't going to take it any more".
Again, you've looked into my own mind and you see the greed. Big business has the mentality of get rich quick, rather than a more fair and equitable system. It makes more sense to me, to sell an auto, for half the price they currently are... and less years to pay for them..egad! They don't seem to realize that by screwing all of us, they eventually screw themselves, which is only a tiny fraction of our problems. Personally I believe inflation should have stopped, raises in wages leveled off...from top to bottom, in order to keep our capitalist system working...but working in a more fair manner. There's no reason on this Earth, that a CEO should be granted hundreds of millions as a bonus, much less make the extremely high wages they do. And that's just the CEO's! Not even mentioned or discussed, is the rest of the white collars, getting their huge bonuses. Bonuses for successfully screwing their next door neighbor out of all that money, when by being more fair, we could ALL be living a mighty comfortable life.
And next, I could start on welfare and it's pitfalls, but that may have to be another article to talk with each other about. As it is, it's not being done right. Hmmm... I feel an article coming on. I hope it can be kept as civil.
By the way.. I'd like to, again, thank everyone for their politeness and willingness to discuss, rather than just insult and demean each other. Right-flippin-ON!!!
I love that you put "But the truth is WE all are to blame" and the solution is also us! words so true
Thank you >>>Please Stand Up And Take a Bow!!
You hit it head on.
Next time we Vote I am writing you in !!!
This is the most civil and well-informed post I've read on here, EVER and by the way, I'd vote for you too.
