As of Monday afternoon, Paul Wolfowitz remains in the Chair of President of the World Bank. Officials and former officials calling for his resignation are seeing an increase in resolve from Wolfowitz. He has hired an attorney, and his obstinance is beginning to weaken the position of the USA. The US has been the only power allowed to appoint a President of the World Bank.
Some officials say they are not questioning the right of the US to make the appointment, but it is becoming clear that the right is being challenged. Wolfowitz is not helping the situation by insisting on staying in his present post.
World Bank operations are intended to improve financial conditions in poor nations around the world. The Bank has been the focus of controversy in the past, and Wolfowitz was appointed specifically to clean up corruption in the Bank's operations. Starting his tenure with a nepotism scandle is not likely to win him a lot of support.
"The Financial Times Deutschland" newspaper citing only the German Governor of the World Bank says that European directors are united in believing Paul Wolfowitz should step down for the good of the Bank.
The financial Times did publish a letter signed by 42 former top World Bank Executives calling for his resignation.
The German governor of the World Bank Called for his resignation since that time. Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul said World Bank President Wolfowitz: "Should do the bank a service and take responsibility for his own actions."
Wolfowitz has become a problem for the World Bank, and his behavior is again creating questions about the cronyism in the Bush Administration.
