-- Barack Obama, criticizing Palin's claim of being "anti-earmark"
See Earmarks Database from the Office of Management and Budget, if you're wondering what kind of spending is going on behind the scenes.
Citizens Against Government Waste maintains a more detailed database.
The 1,188 projects, totaling $2.8 billion, in this year’s Congressional Pig Book Summary symbolize the most egregious and blatant examples of pork. As in previous years, all of the items in the Congressional Pig Book Summary meet at least one of CAGW’s seven criteria, but most satisfy at least two:
- Requested by only one chamber of Congress;
- Not specifically authorized;
- Not competitively awarded;
- Not requested by the President;
- Greatly exceeds the President’s budget request or the previous year’s funding;
- Not the subject of congressional hearings; or
- Serves only a local or special interest.
In fiscal year 2008, Congress stuffed 11,610 projects (the second highest total ever) into the 12 appropriations bills worth $17.2 billion. The 11,610 projects represent a 337 percent increase over the 2,658 projects in fiscal year 2007. The $17.2 billion is a 30 percent increase over the fiscal year 2007 total of $13.2 billion. Only the Defense and Homeland Security bills included earmarks in fiscal year 2007, so comparisons of other bills are made between fiscal years 2008 and 2006. Total pork identified by CAGW since 1991 adds up to $271 billion.
Alaska led the nation with $556 per capita ($380 million). The runners up were Hawaii with $221 per capita ($283 million) and North Dakota with $208 per capita ($133 million).

"Did you pay attention to the last two days of your convention? Were you not watching? ... When you start just focusing exclusively on trying to tear the other person down instead of what you are going to do on behalf of the American people to deal with this economy," Obama said, "then that's not serving Democrats, that's not serving Republicans, that's not serving anybody."
-- Barack Obama, criticizing John McCain for saying he would reduce the partisan rancor in Washington.

I sure hope America is better than that.
He's an up and comer for sure - he could have been the head of the Young Republicans if he hadn't' been caught.
And what was it that they were so down on Kerry about 4 years ago. "I was against before I was for it?????????? Same with Palin. She was for Bridge to nowhere before she was against it. Kept the money anyway. This will all be too subtle to comprehend for GOP hard core. But, I don't think all GOPers are stupid.
Shelbia - did you like "Trading Places?"
Good at seeing legitimate points in someone else's side of an argument, despite disagreeing with them? Usually. I try not to overreact emotionally - and even when I do, I try to respond with reason. (He who stoops to profanity first, loses.)
I'm sick of all the McCain lies already
Why doesn't HE love to get down in the mire and attack?
Doesn't he know that is what politicians are SUPPOSED to do?
Why is Obama ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS coming up with these facts and figures?
Why is Obama ALWAYS talking issues?
Why did Obama tell Daily Kos to stay away from smear tactics, and the Palin's family? Doesn't Obama realize that many Americans LOVE gossip innuendo, dirt, and rumours, even if the rumors are false? Doesn't Obama realize Americans LOVE skeletons brought out of the closet, even if they have to do with children?
Obama may need to get away from issues, and start doing what the Republicans do -- becoming a non-ISSUE candidate,
a nowhere man, with nowhere plans
before certain Republicans really start to like him.
Good article, Holly!
Holly, Excellent post and factual and not angry or maybe angry but a Righteous anger,
Nee, Great point, who does this man think he is using facts, figures, truths, kindness, caring and an ability to try to work to help all people!!! How dare he!! He may actually set politics back to the days of JFK!!!
Lea, I was one of those independents at the start of all of this but when I saw the crap that the neo-con (artists) Republicans were laying down both in politics and on here on a daily basis and plus that hatred and not real reasons that they cited for doing so I am about to send in today my Form to change back to a Democrat. The last time I was registered a Democrat was Ithink about 15 years ago and after a brief time as a Republican I went independent. Now after seeing what they are all about and have even more so become and the people that represent them here on Gather I am going back to Democrat and I do not see changing again for quite some time.
Shelbia, I love the way that you put that. Or maybe seeing just one of those upper class above the real world people switch lives with me for six months in a trading places (great movie by the way Elmo) and if they can say the same things than that they are saying now maybe I would consider changing again. Actually though I think it takes a life time of seeing some of the things that I have seen as first an inner city boy and young man in Philadelphia working blue collar and now a suburbanite trying to survive day to day just so my kids can have a better life to be able to truly understand in many ways how unfair the real world is.
Delores, please put your fangs in and stop showing that rancor that Holly is talking about. Can you please give me the exact details on the earmark that benefitted Michelle Obama's employer and the FACTUAL statistics on how that was done? Sure Obama did vote yes on bills with earmarks, every senator has done so. They have no choice but to do so in order to get bills passesthat have benefits for all people in em. You call him a hypocrit though is hysterical when you are supporting McCain/Palin who the latter ogf the two stood on a stage and flat out said "I told congress to stick that bridgeto nowhere, where the sun doesn't shine" when in reality she knew that she first supported it, than took the 23 million that was built into it than turned against it. Or one that said mankind is not responsible for global warming but now says "well maybe they are because "Big Daddy Johnny" says they are so I have to agree with him. Or one that makes her pregnantteenage daughter a public display of a private matter and i more than likely forcing to yong adults (or not even yet) to get married and raise a child when in reality they are not ready or it and it is probably the last thing they really want. Or than we can go to "Jukebox Johnny" one of the biggest flip-floppers ever in politics (if u like I will provide you with all of the FACTUAL times he did that) and also a man who even Karl Rove says is running a nasty deceptive campaign.
Karl Freaking Rove i saying that, that s like Hiter saying, don't like that guy because he the biggest hater of Jewish people I have ever seen!! PLEASE DELORES, wake up and get off of that sad over used Kool aid reference while you are at it? Do you know the FACTS on where that Kool-Aid thing actually started? Karl ove (oh no not him again) used to bring pitchers of Kool-aid outside of the congressional building and serve it to supporters of legislation that he wanted approved. hmmmm.. I wonder what was in that kool-aid? You neo-cons who have nothing else to work with use that same old tired Jim Jones Kool aid reference again and again and it is sad!!! You need new script writers. know after McCain loses I am sure that the guys that are writing the very scripted lies that he is saying will be available. Or mybe they are right now, since he has "suspended his campaign"
He is rushing to DC in an effort to save the conomy when in reality all he can do is vote for the package. He has nothing at all to do with writing what is in it. But hey since he hasnt voted on anything since April, I guess that is a start!
Thanks, Bob C. - The blatant disregard for FACTS depresses me.
I know what you mean about the ignorance of the facts. Funny thing is that I have always been an open minded person and would not mind at all being swayed to a better way of thinking by someone who gave facts to support their arguments and also limited the attacks and insults. But with what I have seen from "one side of the equation" here on Gather, they actually swayed me completely over to the opposite side of what they support. Such bitterness, hatred, insults and lies really shouldn't be what decides what is best for this country. That happened 8 years ago and again 4 years ago and look where it has us right now. But don't worry "Jukebox Johnny" is on his way to DC to save us all. So it is all going to be okay!! That is if they even remember who he is when he gets there. It has been a while.
I guess that light is just too bright for your sensitive eyes, and you wear sunglasses AND blinders.

Yeah Palin should not throw stones on this issue but the it'd be nice to see this be pointed out that the list of Dems on that list is pretty impressive too. Bi-partisanship spending is very ugly indeed
