I knew the economy was in trouble. I can see it at the grocery store in each and every aisle. What I paid for bare essentials six months ago, has increased to the point of where I seriously question whether those things are now essential. Hey, I have to eat, right? But now, it's no more meat or high end veggies. High end veggies? Yup. A head of iceberg lettuce is now out of my price range and forget about the red or yellow bell pepper or one or two leek. And I'm talking about the WalMart prices here in my little burg.
And now, Sam's Club is limiting the amount of rice their members can purchase. Rice? In the United States? The United States is being rationed of rice? What's next? Potatoes and white beans? Those are all of my favorite foods in addition to corn and homemade pasta. The fresh corn price is climbing up as well as any of the canned varieties. So I'm down to the homemade pasta? Guess I'd better get rather inventive with some new sauce recipes and try to find one or two cheap-o veggies to throw in. Mushrooms maybe? Some sardines? I make a mean homemade Italian Dressing so I can add that if the sugar price isn't at the roof.
These cooking shows on the Food Channel, and Rachel Ray, and Martha, etc. all give us great recipes, but they obviously do not take into account the cost of the ingredients that go into them. (Olive oil? Who can afford a well branded olive oil?) Ina and Rachel and Martha and Emeril and Bobby Flay don't have to worry about the cost of their ingredients.
I eat very little as it is. I eat when I'm at work as it doesn't cost me. On the days that I don't work, lately, I just don't eat. And, yes, I'm losing weight. I lost about 40 pounds in a year's time, but I wasn't trying. Didn't sit down and say, "Now Bonnie, you just gotta eat less of that good stuff and head on over to the cheap-o displays. But I did go. And there are some good things over there. You just gotta rearrange your taste buds a bit. But you gotta eat, right?
I do have a few frozen foodstuffs poked back in the freezer but some of that is so old that i don't know whether I'd end up with a nice full belly or a nice full belly of botulism or samonella or what my lie remaining under the last year's fresh pulled corn. (I think I did blanch it tho)
So what do I do now. Head to the food bank? I don't even have a functioning vehicle. I joined a co-opbut with no car, how can I get over there?
But you gotta eat, right? I see me eating pasta and white beans for a while. I'm not overweight at all (105#) Mebee sommeone will send me a daily care package but I ain't holding my breath.
How are you all handling this recession (Bush says 'slowdown'?
But you gotta eat, Right>

Although I can't imagine ever being rationed rice!
I love sardines and always have. When I eat them around other people, I always get the "Ah, Ewwwww!!!". I also like to fix rice and go for the dry and not the instant. That instant stuff is such a travesty to me.
Well, I ate at work today.....now I'm off for the week-end. Guess I'll have to check out the freezer.
My husband works for a food manufacturer. Their raw materials have gone up in price considerably. But the interesting reason is, not just because of oil prices (transportation) but the fact that the price for feed for the chickens has skyrocketed because of biofuel! So many farmers have switched to growing fuel instead of food.
Every little thing we do, choice we make has a wide ripple effect!
If you want points, I've found I can get my 1500 in 15 minutes by just requesting friends. I go by state to state or find a gather friend and click on their friends. That's when I don't have the time to play or read on BT
Keep your head up Bush will be gone soon. Hopefully things will be better then.
