My son, Korey, has struggled through school since kindergarten. When Korey entered the second grade without mastering the alphabet the teachers became concerned. I had become concerned when he was in the first grade. Korey was showing tendencies toward dyslexia and was struggling to process information as he wrote it on paper. Korey was frustrated and upset all the time because of the difficulty he was having in school. At the end beginning of second grade Korey received testing and was diagnosed with a learning disability. In third grade, Korey was retained because he failed the reading portion of standardized testing in Florida. In fourth and fifth grade, Korey was assigned to a dropout prevention program at Modesta Robins Partnership School sponsored by the Chi Chi Rodriguez foundation in Clearwater, Florida. With the help he received Korey has made a lot of progress. As I watch Korey today, I can see how far he has come since discovering his learning challenge. He still gets frustrated but things are easier for him now. Through all of this, we discovered that Korey has artistic talent. Korey, now in 7th grade, was not selected for art class this year. We were very disappointed but will try again next year. Korey hopes to find success as a graphic artist, web designer or any profession that uses his artistic talent.
I have been taking college courses for three years hoping to complete my own art degree. Worrying about saving and paying for college, commuting to my full time job, attending college, cleaning the house, and keeping up with Korey and his schoolwork, the days can become very stressful and exhausting. Finding time to wind down and relax can be difficult. My favorite way to relax and take my mind off issues is to read a magazine. I can always find an article that is interesting, informative, touching or entertaining. An article doesn’t take as long to read as a book so I don’t have to worry about putting it down and remembering where I left off. With eight magazines subscriptions, I never run out of new material to read. A college scholarship would certainly help Korey achieve his goal and alleviate the stress of finding a way to pay for it.
