Diapers and formula and ballet and books and soccer and… what’s that? College? It seems as each year slips away, my kids grow and their needs become more expensive. But, like most parents, the cost is worth seeing the smiles and wonderment fulfilled with each new experience.
My six-year-old daughter, Rachael, and four-year-old son, Jordan, are in school and learning letters and math and even science at an amazing rate. Everyday, learning something new about the world around them and letting curiosity fuel their imagination. Rachael proclaims she will be a ballet dancer/ cowgirl/ veterinarian when she is older. And Jordan? A fire chief- for now.
Though my husband and I started early saving money for college, we both realize it will never be enough. Rachael still has 13 years or so before college and I can’t begin to imagine what it may cost by then. No doubt tuition, books, fees, supplies, and housing will have more than tripled by then.
Because there are so many other things to worry about in the present, like spelling tests and loose teeth, I find it vital to deal with “college-funding stress” with a couple surefire techniques- positive thinking and bubbles, as in bubble baths.
Some might say positive thinking is just denial, but I’m optimistic at heart, and lean on my faith consistently. It provides a peace of mind in the midst of daunting and intimidating situations that can wreak havoc on our minds.
Bubble baths on the other hand, are great for relaxing the body and undoing the stress caused by so many money matters, including college. Bubbles, candles, and a great magazine or lighthearted book is the perfect combination for soothing tensions.
Though the stress of paying for college will never go away it is certainly beneficial to cope with it by not only planning and saving, but also finding techniques to deal with the effects of the anxiety. Our family is healthier and happier when we don’t let the pressures of money overshadow what really matters- each other.
