the west coast of michigan is very pretty but Detroit is a total downer

Hey, Mark:

Having grown up in Wisconsin, I have a great appreciation for Michigan as well. I've seen it at it's best and worst. When I got married the first time, many years ago, we drove through Michigan, coming East from New England. As it turned out, we ended up staying overnight in a seedy little motel in Detroit. Not the best timing. It was during the Democratic Convetntion in Chicago in 1968 when they had the riots (we came back trhough Chicago) and they were rioting in Detroit, too.

I have much more peaceful recollections of playing at the North Country Folk Festival in Itonwood, Michigan on the upper penninsula in the 80's. It' spectacular country up there! I also did a concert in a small town 50 miles or so north of Detroit in the 80's and really enjoyed the whole trip.

When we fly out to Wisconsin, we much prefer flying through Detroit. O'Hare in Chicago is a nightmare.

And finally, every fall for many years, my parents, who lived in southern Wisconsin, rove along the shores of Lake Superior to enjoy the fall colors.

You can see, I have many fond remembrances of Michigan.. and had some good friends there.

I couldn't agree more! Let's not forget the sand dunes, and the abumdance of roadside stands selling fresh fruits and vegetables!

I love it here as well... I don't think I will ever leave.. I could do with out our state wide recession at the moment. But it is a beautiful place to live.

I would love to visit but I am allergic to cold weather so just spring and summer for me.

Sounds like the only real drawback is the very cold weather, but I have to say that now I want to visit and see for myself. I have a friend who lives in Dewitt and absolutely refuses to move - he's been offered countless promotions, and turned them all down. What is the humidity like there? Is there a lot? I'm thinking maybe not because of all the lake breezes, but I'm curious.

And the fishing is fantastic from what I've heard! Hope to get there someday! C):-)

As far as the cold weather goes, It does get cold. But Moma says you can always dress warmer. You can only undress to an extent then your nude!
A Yooper is someone that lives in the upper part of our state.
Yes, record catches of fish have been caught through out our state! (We are also called the land of many lakes!) We have an abundance of deer for all of the hunters and more Mom & Pop shops to buy your trinkets from than you can shake a stick at! A perfect vacation place to relax and unwind!

I was born in Mt. Pleasant...we lived in Michigan until we moved here to Georgia. I know mom wants to move back, but dad's job keeps us here.

I just returned form Florida, and while it was beautiful, I have no idea how you guys survive the heat and humidity!! LOL I thought I might melt into a giant puddle!
We are close to Lake MI, and the humidity gets a bit bad once in a while, but i can say now that maybe what i thought was "bad" humidity really is nothing at all compared to Florida and Georgia!

I had a friend that lived in Waterford and I loved visiting. I don't know what part of the state that is in. It is gorgeous!

I am in Mt. Pleasant and I am a troll... those that live under the bridge are considered trolls...

As for cold, I can only speak for the area I was from, and heck yeah, it gets cold! But I can honestly say, that's prepared me for the rest of my life, and nothing has ever been that cold since! : )

Michigan would be fine if it wasn't for Ann Arbor.

We also have the most lighthouses, I believe and you are never more than 7 (? I think it's less) miles from a body of water.

Don't forget about the fall season with it's blue sky October days and brillant leaf colors.

But it CAN get humid here. We've been blessed with absolutely gorgeous weather this summer. Right Mark?

I will always live here I think... I can never get enough of our state.. It's been awhile since I have seen a sunset on Lake Michigan.. I will have to make it a priority some day soon...

I was born in MI, but grew up near Pittsburgh, PA, with only infrequent visits north to visit family in the Romulus/Inkster/Detroit area. To this day I will admit to being a native of MI but deny anything having to do with PA. That's why I live in FL, I guess.

I used to live in Illinois and every so often I would go book hunting in Michigan.
( I'm a collector) I would start with the a bookstore on Red Arrow Highway and work my way upstate, It's a beautiful place!

Do you work for the Chamber of Commerce? Michigan is one of the five states in the United States that I have not YET visited. Will have to make it there one of these days.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh Michigan. HOME. I made the mistake of moving away from Michigan 20 years ago and have regretted it ever since. If I were alone I would move back, but there are others to consider and no one wants to make the move. Maybe one day. It's one of my dreams. I miss it so much. I was raised in Bloomfield Hills. Where are you at?

Mark, I agree!!! My hubby is always trying to get me to move but no way. I love it here. Especially up north - it is just glorious....

I was born and raised there, in Midland. I went to school at CMU (a bartender at the old Blackstone bar, before it moved). I left in '82 and have only been back for family visits. I miss it. If only I could find work there, I'd move back in a heartbeat.

Michigan is ALL THAT Mark. People should come up north to see the beauty and majesty of it all. I live in the Manton area. Born and raised in Flint. Have lived in a couple different cities in throughout my life. DH and I keeping going north every time we move. Its nice to hear how someone else loves Michigan. TX Mark

Since I am a Michigander, I agree with you. The natural wonders in this state are amazing and easily accessible for people of all ages. The shoreline drive around Petosky is one of the more beautiful places in the world. Most think of Detroit and Detroit is in Wayne County. 90% of Michigan's population lives in Wayne County. Most of Michigan is rural with forest, farms, over 10,000 lakes, gigantic sand dunes and wilderness. It has 3 good seasons. I hate Winter.

I love living in Michigan beacuse I get to experince all of the seasons and lots of rain and snow. It's good to know someone else likes living in my state too.
