First the Remedies:
Old Country Ointment
Mix together one part flour and one part honey. Apply to wounds or other skin irritations. You can also substitute the honey with spring sap from the Horse Chestnut tree.
Old Tyme Diarrhea Cure
Mix one teasponn honey in eight ounces of barley water. Drink this in the summer to stop diarrhea.
Bedwetting Treatment
Before the suspect child goes to bed, make sure no liquid refreshment is consumed. Just before time to go to sleep, give the child a generous dose of comb honey.
Nighty-night Tranquilizer
Steep one cup of Chamomile tea, dry mint leaves, and one teaspoon honey for three minutes. This is a relaxing combo, and should help you sleep soundly.
Nana's Cough Syrup
Mix equal part of spicy honey and lemon or lime juice. Keep tightly covered and take one teaspoonful every two hours, as needed.
Auntie's Tonic
Combine three tablespoons of mild honey,one egg yolk, two tablespoons butter, and a dash of salt. Beat until creamy. Store in tight container in the refrigerator. Spread one tablespoon on toast or biscuit. Repeat every day until you feel better.
Next the Beauty Treatments
Honey Hair Bath
Two days before usage, mix one cup of honey and one-half cup pure olive oil with an egg beater, and store in a tightly covered glass jar. One-half hour before shampooing shake mixture vigorously and apply to hair. Wrap hair in plastic or a towel, and leave application on for thirty minutes. Shampoo and rinse as usual.
Note: This was the hair treatment Queen Anne used religiously. Her secret was so closely guarded that it was only after her death that anyone else was allowed to use this mixture.
Cleopatra's Facial Balm
Combine one tablespoon honey, one tablespoon milk, and one egg white. Beat well with an egg beater, and apply to thoroughly cleaned face and neck. Leave application on for one-half hour. or until dry and brittle. Wash face with soft lukewarm washcloth. then splash face with cold water to feel the tingle.
Note: Cleopatra used this mixture on her entire body to keep her skin soft.
For Wrinkles:
Melt together one ounce of white beeswax, two ounces of honey, and two ounces of juice from lily bulbs. Stir well and store in covered container. Apply at bedtime and leave on overnight.
Now the Recipes
Deviled Beets
Blend: 3 Tbsp butter, 2 Tbsp mustard, 1/2 tsp paprika, 1 Tbsp honey, 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1 tsp orange flavoring. Bring to a boil, add beets, and heat well. Serve hot.
Baked Beans
Add honey, ground ginger, and mustard to canned pork and beans, and bake for thirty minutes at 325 degrees.
Fruit Dessert
Peel and slice oranges, then dip them in honey, then in toasted shredded coconut. Place in dish, and set aside. Mix 4 ounces cream cheese, 3 Tblsp mayonaise, and 3 tsp honey. Fold in 1/2 pint whipping cream. Spread over oranges, and top with 1 cup drained, pitted cherries.
Did you know:
Honey is hygroscopic, which means that it keeps food moist and tender. So, if you are baking goods to send with kids to school, for a bake sale, or overseas to servicemen/women, bake with honey instead of sugar to insure freshness.
