Today, October 23rd, 2009 marks the release of the latest film in the ongoing Saw franchise, Saw VI. A new film has been released every year since 2004, and this film was always meant to be the finale.
However, Lionsgate has been talking about continuing the series even further, as every film has been a moneymaker for them. This bothers me, because I actually like these films, despite everyone else's thoughts about them. Are they good films? No. Are they cheesy films? Yes. But I think that maybe that cheese factor is something I like about them. It makes them seem like an elaborate horror film from the 70's or 80's, and I kind of enjoy it.
That being said, I do not want these films to continue much further. After all, six films is enough to make me happy, and there's always the possibility that if they continue to make these, they'll start to make less money at the box office. No money, means no sequel. This is both good and bad, as the Saw films are famous for their convoluted twist endings.
If one of the films does poorly enough to warrant an end to the series, but has a twist ending, that means we will never get the resolution to the story. The Saw franchise will just end with another twist ending, and we'll never know what might have happened had there been another film.
I'm going to see the sixth film (review will be up some time next week), but I really hope that I get the resolution I'm looking for. I really don't need anymore Saw films. And what I really don't need is a Saw film...in 3D. Dead serious. Look it up if you don't believe me....
