While Adventureland managed to convince me that I would hate working in an amusement park, I think that Zombieland has managed to convince me that I would love living in a world overrun by zombies...provided that I followed all of the rules of survival, and I didn't get eaten.
In the horror comedy Zombieland focuses on two men who have found a way to survive a world overrun by zombies. Columbus is a big wuss -- but when you're afraid of being eaten by zombies, fear can keep you alive. Tallahassee is an AK-toting, zombie-slaying' bad ass whose single determination is to get the last Twinkie on earth. As they join forces with Wichita and Little Rock, who have also found unique ways to survive the zombie mayhem, they will have to determine which is worse: relying on each other or succumbing to the zombies.
I love this film. Most zombie comedies are just zombie movies with some jokes thrown in. We follow a group of characters who realize that the zombie apocalypse has hit, and we watch them get eaten one by one. But that's not the case here.
The genius of Zombieland is the fact that it takes place three months after the zombie uprising, so the only humans left are the ones that we know are going to survive. They're having no problem outwitting the zombies. What they are having problems with, is each other. Our characters are so radically different, and don't get along, but must if they are to continue to thrive in this new world.
It's a total road trip movie that takes place in a zombie infested world, and I love it for that. And for those of you who are zombie lovers and are worried that this film will be more comedy and less gore, trust me, you'll get your fix. There was some great gore in here, and there were some scenes, where I was genuinely scared.
Both Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg are great in this, and even though they seem like the least likely duo on screen, they have some great chemistry. They really are into their characters, so much that I forgot they were acting at a point. It's like they achieved what Michael Cera and Jack Black were trying to achieve earlier this year in the film Year One.
There's not much more that I can say about this film without giving away something great about it. Trust me. You'll be much happier going to see this, the less that you know about it.
