Inglourious Basterds is the most fun I've had in theaters all year. I know I said that about Star Trek, and G. I. Joe, but I am telling you, this is a FUN movie.
The latest film by Movie Mastermind Quentin Tarantino, stars actor Brad Pitt as Lieutenant Aldo Raine, the only on screen redneck who I've ever considered to be purely awesome. He's Jewish, and has decided to put together a special team of Jewish-Americans, who want to put an end to the Nazi's terror.
We jump ahead a year, to discover that they've killed many Nazi soldiers already. So many, that they've made a name for themselves:
The Basterds.
Along with a dozen other characters (though very interesting ones), the Basterds decide to sneak into a movie premiere, which the leaders of the Nazi army (including Hitler himself) will be attending.
To quote Mike Myer's line from the film:
"It would appear as though we have all of our eggs in one basket. The Mission; blow up the basket."
This has to be among Tarantino's best work, and has some great performances as well. This film has managed to not only create one great new character to add to the list of Tarantino's on screen creations, but two. One by the name of the Jew Hunter.
I imagine that this would have to be a WWII veteran's dream, as they do some truly terrible things to Nazi soldiers in this film. When people tell you that this movie is bloody, take it with a grain of salt. Because it gets bloody.
My one criticism is that there's not enough time spent with the Basterds themselves. While this is a looooong movie, and there's so much going on, Quentin managed to make the mistake of making the Basterds too great of characters, to the point where I wanted less of the other great characters, and more of them. Maybe he'll do a sequel...
Great film, and if you can, see it on the big screen. It really is an event.
Now if I can somehow manage to get in to see District 9.....
