What's your favorite film AND WHY?

Everyone has been great and posting favorite films... But I want to know WHY?

Gone with the Wind...I love Civil War Stories for some reason

Jaws: Its a classic. It was the first summer blockbuster. There's something inherently genius about its simplicity. "Killer shark terrorizes beach town." And Robert Shaw's speech about wearing a life jacket is my favorite monologue of all time.

Through a Glass Darkly: This film is dark and tragic yet doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a modern day film about someone who's losing their mind. Harriet Andersson is amazing as a woman plagued by a mental sickness that doctors of the time couldn't quite understand.

"Love, Actually" is my favorite. It's got humor, sadness and it's all about love. It has wonderful music and a top level cast.

"Braveheart" - Epics don't get any better than this (okay, "LOTR"). Scotland, one man's quest for independence, love, war... how can you beat that?

William Wallace (Braveheart) certainly does have some strong motivation. I especially appreciate that there are two of them: Love and Independence. I feel that most American viewers wouldn't quite relate to the struggle the Scottish clans faced for their freedom. But throw in the love story, and we're on board.

One of the movies I watch over and over is 6 hour BBC version of Pride and Prejudice.

I like the pacing, the looks that say more than the dialog, the Eedwardian politeness, the costumes, the assortment of characters, the subtle humor.

The classic, "Gone with the Wind." So powerful of a story. Loved it.

It's actually another Batman film. . .not from this year and not live-action.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, 1993. The predecessor to The Dark Knight, this animated film in some ways is darker and, dare I say it, even bloodier. Instead of Batman having lead time to escape the police, the police just try to kill him on sight outright! Only the film's perceived enemy, The Phantasm, saves the Bat's bacon. (The identity of the Phantasm, by the by, is a woman). Truly one of the all-time great animated films.

"Dune" - I thnk this is the one that hooked me on Scifi movies as a kid

What's yours???

Mine (for the moment) is "Lost in Translation."

For years it was "Out of Africa" or "Hannah and Her Sisters," depending on the day of the week.

Oh, I forgot to put my reason: Not only is the story funny yet compelling, but having been an expat (although not in Japan), I know that feeling of being a stranger in a strange land very well. This movie really speaks to that, to finding yourself, to seeing with new eyes, and to that uncanny connection that sometimes happens between people in the most unlikely of circumstances. Sofia Coppola (the director) has a bright future ahead of her.

Where the Heart Is.. first it has Natalie Portman, Ashley Judd, and Stockard Channing.. 3 of the best actresses, in my opinion, it centers on poor people with real life problems and has a happy ending......
