Determined to see the morning
from the first bright spark on grey
you pad from your pooh bear bed
in little mermaid pajamas
to share it with me.
Never mind that I'd prefer
the darkness for a while longer
butterfly wrapped in a blue cotton cocoon
until your little hand pats my cheek
insistent.
You pull me
to the couch
instructing me along the way
in all the togetherness I've missed
by foolish sleeping.
We sit
in the stillness
you curled in my lap
leaning against my chest
like a doctor listening
for a heartbeat.
As the darkness shades to light
you sing a little made up song
and smile up at me
Then I'm glad I didn't miss
the sun turning your brown eyes
to gold.

Take care!
You just brought back some wonderful memories, and though our son is all-grown now, those memories are always right there - though I couldn't have written about them half as well as you just did.
