This book is written by a woman named Diana Jones and on the cover it claims: "Mad about Harry? Try Diana." Chrestomanci is a title for an enchanter who basically governs the magic of all worlds. In the first story (volume 1) we read about a kid who is to become the next Chrestomanci. In the second (volume 1) we read about the current Chrestomanci as a boy. The third story (volume 2) strangely enough seems to have little to do with the first two at all, and Chrestomanci plays a very small role. This one has to do with the Montanas and the Petrocchis, and their journey to save their small little country. The fourth (volume 2) is set in a time when witches were burned at the stake, and once again Chrestomanci has a small role (but admittledly bigger than the third story.)
Overall, the first volume was well written. It is a catchy story and holds your attention pretty well from the beginning of the story. The second story takes a little longer to understand how it fits in with the scheme of the first. I was very disappointed in the second volume because it doesn't seem to fit in with the title. It doesn't really have much to do with Chrestomanci at all. However, having said that the fourth story does redeem itself and is fairly interesting and involved.
As far as her claim to be up to Harry standards? I think she falls short of the mark. I would recommend these books but especially the first volume. I believe it will be an enjoyable read!

Although it doesn't sound like a series I'd be interested in reading myself, thanks for taking the time to read and review it. I have no doubt that it will strike a chord with other Gather readers. :-)
