According to Yahoo critics gave this movie a B. I think I would rate it more of a C-. To those of you who have not read the book, I want to warn you that this is nothing like the previews make it out. This is not a fantasy movie about a make believe world. It is a movie dealing with real life situations like poverity, grief, bullying. This is a great movie to take your kids to and deal with these subjects. It's a great movie to open up conversations with your kids. It's been a long time since I've read the book, but it seems to follow it fairly closely. This movie reminds me a little bit of the movie made quite a while back called "My Girl." Warning: There are some theologies expressed in this movie that will make Christians cringe. All in all, this movie was "just okay for me, dawg" (as Randy would say).
