What's the best Recession Rock? Lots of good choices -- but forget anything out of the current recession!
That's my take. The New York Times Freakanomics blog has a little contest going this week to guess who's singing on a recent Recession Rock song. I don't know the answer. Sounds like Axl Rose to me. I don't care.
The best stuff came out of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Now there was a recession! crippling unemployment, runaway inflation, an energy crisis -- and a crisis of confidence!
How about the first Clash album in 1977? Or "London Calling" in 1979. Has any album captured recession better than Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska" (1982)?
OK, "Nebraska" was more folk than rock. It's Friday afternoon. Tell me what you think was best.
