Happy May 1st Everyone!
This week I launched a new group at the request of Gather. It is called "Recession Tips" and it can be found here www.recession.gather.com
Join today and post your tips for saving money during a recession. Any tips are welcome! From saving on energy, to recipes, to better savings accounts, to investing, to coupons! Anything at all that saves money is welcome!
And if you do not have any money saving tips, come on over and learn some!
In this week's "Saving for the Average Person" I decided to test Susan S's (www.susansmoaks.gather.com) suggestion on buying coupons on eBay.
I was skeptical but gave it a try...
Every month I buy 2- 28 pound buckets of Fresh Step kitty litter. It is pricey at $13 a bucket, but it is the best kitty litter ever.
1. So I went to eBay found 10 coupons for $3 off each bucket and won the bid for $10. The coupons are good until December so I will use them all and will save $30 minus the $10 bid. So I still save $20 on kitty litter that I HAVE to buy.
Total savings: In essence I am getting nearly 2 buckets free. $20
*NOTE: make sure if you bid on coupons that they are REAL coupons and NOT printable ones. A lot of stores do not take those. I only bought from a seller who specifically said the coupons were actual coupons cut from a newspaper.
3. Now I needed dry cat food. My cats only eat Purina One Urinary tract health food which is $18 a bag. I found 2 coupons for $8 off a 7 pound or larger bag. OR 7 pounds free(2 small bags)I paid $6.50 for the coupons including shipping. So, $16 savings minus $6.50 for the coupons equals:
Savings: $9.50
Total cost of all coupons: $16.50
Total savings: $46 minus $16.50
Total savings on all coupons: $29.50!!
I think Susan is definitely on to something!
Thanks all!

Thank you Mandy for creating the group, I joined after I saw Jane's post and I was glad to edit and post my article on tips for tough times to your group. It's a great idea to share and benefit from tips and otherwise unknown goodies - so yay for Mandi and her group!
Neat, that you tested one of the suggestions yourself.
I bought REAL coupons on ebay.
Thanks everyone!
Karen
thanks all!
thanks all!
My brother in law raises beef, & has a freezer full of fish. I raise field corn for my animals. I trade fresh meat and eggs for fresh vegetables from my friends.
The only thing I need to buy are paper goods.
I was informed by my local supermarket a few weeks back that they are not taking any internet coupons, even though they had accepted them in the past.
Since then, however, I have discovered that the self-serve checkout line still accepts them.
Might not be the case everywhere, but probably worth a try if you have an exceptionally good online coupon.
Rick, thanks for that tip...I will try it!
I am gald I could help everyone! Thanks again to Susan S!
Whoever owns (1) the land, (2) the means of production and (3) the basic resources will profit from any recession, when those are used properly.
Saving money will do nothing to protect you from a severe devaluation of the currency.
