I am a 48 year old woman who has worked hard all my life to support my two daughters by myself.
I was born in 1959 and I grew up in Whitman, Massachusetts. I earned an Associate in Science degree at Massasoit Community College. Then at the age of 20, I moved down to Norfolk, Virginia. There I had my two beautiful daughters, Crystal and Karen. And I made Virginia my home away from home until 1997. At that time I was a divorced mother having a hard time trying to support my daughters. So I decided to move back to what I always thought of as home- Massachusetts.
In Massachusetts I made a life for myself and my daughters. I worked retail, and we mostly lived pay check to pay check. Many times I went with holes in my shoes so my daughters could have the things they needed. It seemed like whenever I could save up some money, something would happen that would eat it up.
The last few years have been hard. I fell off a ladder at work and hurt my ankle. Which put me out of work for a while. Then shortly after I had gotten back on my feet I tore some cartilage in my knee. But during both of my recoveries I made use of the time by having my first two books published. "Gifts From God" and "Defend God's Word". I am in the process now of writing my third book.
I have had a love of writing since my early teens. I have written poetry, short stories and attempted song lyrics. Some of my work has appeared in newspapers, anthologies, and on my websites.

I would love to be able to open my own bookstore where I could sell my books. It is like a dream for me. I have even been thinking about the name "Local Artists". I know as a small unknown author how hard it is to get places to carry your books. So I would like the store to be a place where any local artists could sell their products. Books, crafts, photography, etc.
I would love to be able to buy owner occupied property where I could have my book store, live there, and still have additional income coming in through the property. I keep looking on line to see what is available for property, and recently found the perfect place in Harwich (Cape Cod) Massachusetts. The main building has three apartments. A second building has three summer rentals (extra income). And the last building is a small retail building (my book store).
But being a single mom. I have not been able to save any money, and my credit is not perfect.
Is there any programs/loans that will work with woman to help them get there first business?

Try the Small Business Administration website.
Here's another website that might help: Woman Owned
Good luck!
As you go down that road, I hope you will pay a little more attention to your writing. You made (and left) several spelling errors, (including the word writer), used extra words that could have been cut, and published what looks like a first draft. Putting an article like this one out here in public view could help you find connections, but it might also hurt your credibility. If would be a shame if you missed an opportunity because you failed to edit your work.
Best of luck to you!
You should know that bookselling is extremely competitive these days and that independent booksellers are having a tough time surviving. Aside from the mega-stores like Barnes and Noble you will be competing with discounters like Costo, Wal-Mart and online booksellers like Amazon.com. Best of luck to you.
I love your dream, but I think you should be realistic about what's possible. Based on what you shared, you have no savings, no experience running a business, and need to make money doing whatever you do. It's hard to imagine that you'll be able to lease/buy and outfit a bookstore, and even if you could, as Paul says it's an industry where it gets harder and harder to make money each year.
Here's an alternative to consider: What if you got a job, even a part-time job, in an independent bookstore. As you develop a relationship with the owner, you might be able to convince her to carry books from the authors that interest you, creating a niche for that particular bookstore. At minimum, you would get valuable experience working in a bookstore, and you might even find you can satisfy your ambition by bringing unknown authors to market through somebody else's store.
Just an idea.
Conratulations on your published books.
