I was watching Dr. Phil the other day and he had a woman on who ran a site called freerangekids.com. I was curious and checked it out. She claims that in today's world parents are more over protective than ever. Following is an excerpt fro her site:
Do you ever...
..let your kid ride a bike to the library? Walk alone to school? Take a bus, solo? Or are you thinking about it? If so, you are raising a Free Range Kid! At Free Range, we believe in safe kids. We believe in helmets, car seats and safety belts. We do NOT believe that every time school age children go outside, they need a security detail. Most of us grew up Free Range and lived to tell the tale. Our kids deserve no less. This site dedicated to sane parenting. Share your stories, tell your tips and maybe one day I will try to collect them in a book. Meantime, let's try to help our kids embrace life! (And maybe even clear the table.)
Are parents in this day and age actually over protective? Do parents keep to tight of a leash on their children? Or are over protective parents actually few and far between? Dr. Phil pointed out that if a parent is over protective that may lead to more problems down the road. He says that those children will be more rebellious and try and push you away. Is the world so numb and heartless that we can't think that we have people watching out for children in our own communities? Is it an age where parents are damned if they do and damned if they don't?

Ok - I agree with sarah g and Amy.
My husband is a Deputy and an Investigator, I was a 911 dispatcher and I worked at the Felony Probation Office.
Free Range Kids? Yes, I read about them all the time on CNN. But it isn't my kids I am reading about.
Go ahead and ask my 3 adopted boys if we are over protective. They will simply laugh in your face when you ask them that question.
