I just got back from the vet and Merlin is not a pretty sight. No, pics at least not yet. He seemed fine last evening but by bedtime he was acting wierd; difficulty walking, listless. He hadn't had anything to eat or drink since morning. For Merlin, the glutton that was unusual but the sure sign that something was wrong was his lack of purring. Merlin has the loudest purr on record and he purrs constantly. He spend the night glued to my side, still and silent. I'm not an early bird but at dawn I was up to check his vital signs. Checking heart rate and respiration was easy. Groping half asleep for rectal thermometer probe covers... not so much. Sticking it up his butt, less so. Prognosis, a high fever.
That meant an infection. I suspected a cat fight when I saw tiny scatches. The bit of kitty claw embedded in his neck clinched the diagnosis. It was time for the vet. We've been lucky to have a mobile vet who'd drive up to the house in his clinic RV. No waiting with other cats or horrors, dogs. No travelling with non stop yowling. No longer though, our beloved vet had recently retired. He'd referred his patients to a new mobile guy but he didn't have a clinic on wheels and didn't do housecalls for emergencies.
Merlin remained near catatonic until we got into the car and he talked for the first time in 24hrs. Loudly, incessantly. It was music to my ears. It must have been doggy day at the clinic. The waiting room teemed with dogs of every description and all in need of the dog whisperer. I paled and held my bundle close. Merlin being the star that he is got whisked almost immediately to the examination room. A few minutes later the vet ushered us in the see a shaved but perkier Merlin, shot up with drugs, hydrated and anal sacs squeezed happy.
The vet found an infected puncture wound that despite my careful examination had missed. That's why he gets paid the big bucks. We left with the patient, who is on antibiotics and to be kept indoors for the next few days. Merlin hates being cooped up and that may prove to be the biggest challenge. That and what to do about the new feral in town named Domino who's part Siamese and all bully.
So friends, I'm lying low on Gather this weekend. I won't be commenting much but I do have a special edition of 'before and after' coming to YOUR FAVORITE PICS. I'll be showcasing Ron B's circa 1969 pics from Vietnam. Check them out on Monday.
Thanks everyone and enjoy the weekend!

Thanks for you kind words and thoughts. I'll tell him.
Debbie, good point about antibiotics. It's common to want to skip them once we feel better.
Layla - I hope he recuperates quickly.
Kris, Merlin refuses to take pills. He's so smart he knows how to spit pills out no matter what. My secret is to crush the pill into powder, mix it with some water and use an eye dropper to quirt it in his mouth before he can protest.
Thanks to all his friends, two legged and four legged who cared to leave a message!
Does Merlin have to wear a collar? They hate those, too.
I'll have to shoot some pics over to you sometime, if you ever do anymore kitty contests. My Cheddar is one good-looking girlie boy.
Here's hoping being cooped up goes fast and he's back outside where he wishes to be.
Please post pics of Cheddar.
If thoughts do indeed have wings then all your good wishes have helped :-)
He must get better soon, he has his Friends of Merlin group to run. Be a friend and post some pics to cheer him up... female felines especially welcome ;-)
Now it's Monday night and I hope he's better still, Layla. Guess all his vacinations were up to snuff and hope that nothing of his misadventure haunts the noble Merlin. Kitties must have their chow! Libby Kitty agrees!
Merlin's appetite has improved and he is drinking water. The true sign of recovery was his yowling to go outside for the first time this morning. We had to decline much to his dismay. He did consent to being photographed and I'll post that today!
Merlin is still sleeping a lot but is getting more cranky about taking his meds which is a good thing. 6 more days of antibiotics to go...
..
U wishing kitty laughter and healing...
Many years ago Little Peggy Knucklehead got an abscess at the base of her tail, possibly from the bite of a raccoon, but more likely from a feral feline. I didn't notice it soon enough. She started to act totally nutty, pacing and growling in a low gutteral voice. I think she was delirious from a fever and was halucinating. I took her to the Vet Clinic where they cleaned the wound, gave her some IV antibiotics and sent me home with a scrip for some chalky, liquid antibiotic that needed to be kept refrigerated. I kept her inside and dosed her regularly and she recovered quickly.
Tell Merlin that I am not only sending healing vibes to him, but that I am also sending bad vibes to his attacker.
I wish we could put body armor on them...
Nippy, thanks, it's easy to miss a wound. Thankfully he's on the mend :-)
Terry, Merlin is delighted to hear from Milo and Pooh!
How horrible!!
I'm glad you got him to the vet quckly and he is on the mend.
I loved your comment that you knew something was wrong because
his purr was missing.
awww.....
Meanwhile I will see if I can find a nice picture to cheer you up!
that is a good reminder!
