cooking and sewing

We homeschool our 3 boys and we all love it.  Last year we were very text book oriented.  This year...well we are kinda out there.  It seems like this year the boys are learning more.  Maybe it's because the work is more fun.  Maybe it's because it's more hands on. 

Today I was talking to a friend on the phone that I hadn't talked to in quiet some time.  She didn't know that we homeschool the boys.  She ask me what they were doing while I was on the phone with her.  Of course once I told her, she got a good little giggle out of it.

What were they doing?

My 11 year old was cooking lunch for all 3 of them.

My 13 year old was washing, drying and putting away some dishes.

My 14 year old was hanging clothes out on the line.

After school the 11 year old had to sew a button back on one of his shirts.  The 13 year old had to sew a place on the sleeve of one of his shirts.

I just think that it is awesome that they can cook and sew.

They'll sure go a lot further than other boys today who are lucky to know how to wipe...their nose.

I love that you are teaching them basics and believe me they should know this stuff - all boys should know how to sew on a button by age ten and for sure all kids should learn how to cook basic stuff by ten - I just think it's a matter of survival and most kids are very capable by age 9 to do most things like hang up clothes, wash in a machine, clean and vacuum - all of your kids sound great- you're a good mother and teacher. My 15 yr. old has been doing his own laundry since he was 11...and he can cook, clean, and sew also. I think it's great skills to have. He is now learning about the stock market. There is a free site called wallstreetsurvior.com

Pher is homeschooled also.

Those are important skills to have... and those skills will make them more attractive as husband material one day.

I made sure my boy could take care of himself too - cooking is an important skill. Actually, I stumbled onto a website where they discussed that a fair percentage of poverty stricken households is headed up by women who have no idea how to cook, shop for or grow food, no skills in saving money, substituting or making do.
Can you imagine - only boxed or convenience food or expensive snacks or McDonalds - unbelievable - never mind that it is poor nutrition or that it costs them so much more money to survive.

I htink its awsome too! my daddy knew now cuz his mom taught him how. Its nice to have basic survival skills that people take advantage of now...

It's great that you are teaching your son those things! My husband sews better than I do. ;) He will be the one teaching our son. My son will be three next month, and helps do some cleaning already.

Good for you. Sounds like you are teaching them some great stuff. I grew up with a father that is a fabulous cook and can sew on buttons. I have already been teaching my son how to put clothes in the washer and dryer. He thinks it's fun right now as he is only 2 1/2. But it's good skills to know.

You call that "home schooling"? I call it doing chores. When do they get to do their math, english, history, geography etc. That is schooling.

I didn't home school but I made sure my boys could cook and clean. They can all sew on a button but not much else.

I've always been textbook oriented too until this year Jasmine wanted to be "unschooled" I am for my own sanity making note each week of what she is doing...and a couple of weeks ago started a diary or blog type lens about it at squidoo
