Gather Upgrades - Sneak preview!

Goodbye Guthrie, hello Hawthorne!

Aus and I were part of a group of lucky Gatherites that were invited to a special sneak preview of the new Gather updates - and I must say, those updates are looking good.

I really like how the new profile is set up - and the ability to spotlight your own work is something I've been hoping to see for a long time now. We'll now also be able to see page views on our items!

Feeds are another great feature- we can see activity within groups of our choosing, on topics of our choosing, with friends of our choosing.

Gather is all about choices these days - seeing the content you want to see, how you want to see it.

I'm really looking forward to this!

The upgrades sound awesome..but I'm still not seeing any mention of the ONE THING we really need.. all this stuff is fluff and toys.. where are the easier publishing upgrades they promised for the next upgrade?? Unless nobody is mentioning it, we still can't divide our groups into separate subjects or group sets, to make it quicker and easier to publish certain content to all relevent groups .. even if they gave us check boxes next to them with a select all choice so we could just click and publish, that would be better than what we have.

Because of the way I use Gather, most of these changes aren't that exciting for me. Although the merged profile and namespace is eerily reminiscent of my recommendations back in July of 2006. :-(

I do like the "Feed Me" feature, although I am concerned that the algorithm will be the same as the current search tool, which returns a lot of erroneous results. If so, this will turn members away from this feature, and it won't be used to its full potential.

I also still haven't had my questions addressed regarding page views. I am of the opinion that members should fully understand what comprises this count once it starts appearing in the community.

So...I guess we'll know more tomorrow! :-)

I don't want to see all that. Should it not be our choice whether we want to see all that? You may want to but I don't Gather should not shove it in our faces and I wish they would change things back the simple way they were.
