Good Evening to all my fellow Gatherites,
Some of you are aware that tomorrow, January 23rd, 2008, I will be returning back to college for another semester of education. Some of you have asked where do I attend, and the answer is Northern Essex Community College; here is the schools link: http://www.necc.mass.edu . It is located techinically in Haverhill, Massachusetts. That is the primary location of the school but we have several sites that also have classes held, like Lawrence, Massachusetts; North Andover, Massachusetts, and a few more that I can not remember the actual locations of.
As well, some people have asked what am I studying at school, well the answer is I am techinically still listed as an Accounting student, but I have yet to actually switch my majors to Business. I am eventually going to do it, and I pretty much just claim that my major is Business even though my paper work says still Accounting. I figure they are so close when it comes to the core classes I will wait a little longer to switch them. At the same time I eventually want to possibly get a PhD in Mathematics. I have loved Mathematics my whole life and it normally and usually comes so easily to me.
Some of you also are already aware that while being back in school last year I was bestoyed a great honor, not just being accepted to an International Business Student Honor Society, called Alpha Beta Gamma; here is the site: http://www.abg.org I was as well I was honored by being named my chapters Vice President. Which in itself is an honor, and I am blessed. As a result I am getting to go to my first conference for the honor soceity. It will be held in Cozumel, Mexico from April 3rd to April 6th, 2008. I am so excited to be allowed to get to experience something like this. (This is why I have been working on saving up my points to get the Macy's Gift Cards on here, to help provide the approiate clothing for the trip.)
As well, some have gotten to know about my history with school. That I graduated high school almost 10 years ago, this June 5th will be my 10 year anniversary. Well right after high school I was accepted to Hawaii Pacific University; here is the site: http://www.hpu.edu . But due to money issues and my parents thinking due to my diabetes and how poorly controlled it was it would be better if I stayed local and attend college near home. So due to that fact, I had to defer my acceptance to Hawaii Pacific Univeristy, and go to Northern Essex Community College. Although at the same time after high school I was attending college full time I had to work full time to pay for bills. Well between full time school, full time work, and dealing with a full time health issue (my diabetes), it was extremely hard. By the third year I was there I had a nervous breakdown one day at work. I had to make a decision. That decision was to leave school and try to work full time.
Over the years while I was first at Northern Essex Community College I pretty much screwed up. My track record was barely pass one class out of the four I was taking, and the others were spilt up between taking Incompletes or Withdrawling half way through on them. When I left after the three years I was placed on Academic Probation. I focused on the real world. By 2004, I pretty much had my breaking point. I was working for the IRS at the time, and due to my diabetes I was fired. Well at that point I decided to focus just on my diabetes. It was time to finally get it back in check. It still at times is not the best it should be, but currently I at least have proper health insurance that I am able to see some of the best of the best in the Diabetes field, heck I am lucky to be a patient at one of the best Diabetic Clinics there are in the world, at least in my opinion; That would be Joslin Diabetes Clinic, in Boston, Massachusetts; here is the link: http://www.gather.com/www.joslin.org . I have been a patient there since after my coma back in September of 1993. And honestly do not ever want to leave their care. But back to the point.
So in Spring of 2006, I am currently 25 almost 26 at this point, unemployed and doing nothing with my life. I decided I want to go back to school. So with out thinking I get a hold of Hawaii Pacific University and reapply. They eventually get back to me saying I do not have enough credits from Northern Essex Community College to transfer out. So they suggest that I go back to Northern Essex Community College and take more classes and work on my grades. So I fill out all the paper work needed to get back into school at Northern Essex Community College.
What would you know, by Fall (September) 2006, I was back in college. Now this time around I was more determined than ever to do my very best. I signed up with 4 courses, which were: Intro to Business, Computer Applications, English Comp 1, and Statistics. I tried and poured my heart in to my studies and it paid off, as well the assistance of some great friends as well, one in particular was Susan * . She helped me immensely while I was taking my English Comp 1 course. I completed that semester more proud of my self ever. Mainly due to what grades and GPA alone for the semester was, as well it was the first time I made the Deans List. My overall semester GPA was a lovely 3.7.
The following semester I did not achieve the Deans List honor, but walked out with a 3.05 GPA for the semester, but this last semester Fall '07 I managed to achieve a lovely GPA of 3.39 which scored me the honor of being on the Deans List once again, twice out of the last three semesters since returning back to school. My overall GPA is now currently a 3.46 which in my eyes is not all that bad.
So with all this I guess it became a bit of bragging, but my intentions of this article was just to announce I will be returning back to college, so I most likely will not be on gather once again for a while. Or if anything not nearly as often as I have been recently. I will try once and a while on the weekends to check in, and even possibly even on my days off from school, which this semester are Tuesday and Thursday's. So you might see me on here you might not. But I am not running away for good. I am just taking a hiatus to try to maintain my grades. Oh this semester I am register for these classes as well: Micro Economics, Intro to Philosophy, Ethics, and Intro to Psychology. So wish me luck everyone. And I will miss everyone as much if not more than you will miss me. Thanks for listening. :o)

I think community colleges are great. I went to one a few years ago and it's so much better than large state schools. I'm in my second semester of graduate school, but I just attend part-time at night or online.
I love the determination that you have! You should be proud of your GPA!! School is very important, so don't give up! YOU CAN DO IT! Good luck to you, and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Keep us posted of your progress!
Nina

First of all, no employer, not even the government, can fire you due to any illness related issues.
Secondly, you are fully entitled to brag about your accomplishments at school. What you have accomplished is nothing short of fantastic. Congratulations!
Third, and lastly, since, generally speaking, community colleges are only two year programs, now is a good time to start thinking about what you are going to do after you get your associate degree. Considering that community colleges are generally associated with some university, it might be a good idea to look into study at whatever school to which Northern Essex is connected.
Most people don't realize what a traumatic experience it can be just learning to be "a grown up". It looks like you've made the hurdle and are well on your way to achieving whatever goals you set out for yourself. Again ...
CONGRATULATIONS!
