Workshops with Karen Barbee Adkisson

12-1:30PM Drills & Frills This workshop will lay the foundation for understanding the body mechanics and muscle training needed for precise, fluid movement in any style of belly dance. Develop core strength and flexibility for ultimate control. Excellent workshop for all levels of dancers.
1:30-2PM break
2:00- 3:30PM ChoreographyThis workshop will include torso layering, a greater use of
shimmies and more abdominal work to build strength, endurance and coordination. Choreography for the skilled dancer.

Zakia Hamwee
In many ways, Zakia Hamwee is a mover and a shaker. For more than 20 years she has been performing and teaching Turkish/Arabic style of belly dance in south Florida and the west Texas area. She is most well known in El Paso for her spectacular events and promoting her culture.
Tasha Banat
Internationally known, Tasha Banat, has been performing and teaching Lebanese style of belly dance and Middle Eastern Debke for more than 35 years. By combining regional dances with belly dance she has created a dance form, that, is heartwarming to the most discriminating Arab viewer as well as entertaining to all audiences.
Karen Barbee Adkisson
Karen Barbee Adkisson, is a leading performer and instructor of Middle Eastern dancing, in her native San Antonio. She is the owner and operator of Karavan Studio home to over 200 students interested in learning the art of Middle Eastern Dance.Karen and her Karavan Dance Troupe have performed to widespread praise not only in Texas, but throughout the country. They have won several dance awards and were recently singled out for critical acclaim by famed New York choreographer Margo Sappington for their performance in the Showcase of San Antonio Dance. Karen was nominated as Best Choreographer in 1997 by the International Academy of Middle Eastern Dance. Karen Barbee Adkisson has trained in Cairo, Egypt, with some of the most accomplished dancers in the world. She has participated in major symposiums in Los Angeles, Houston, New York, Seattle, and numerous other cities, as well as in the Caribbean. In 1989, Karen placed second in a national belly dancing competition in San Francisco, and performed in an international music video with Arab singer Ziad Ansari. The video became a hit in the Middle East, where it is still aired.
